When would you expect to get paid/when would you pay?

I work as a tutor and usually get paid at the end of the month. The hours can vary, depending on if we’ve done less/more that month. The father just tells me to text when I need paying and the amount and he transfers it.
They are going on holiday just before schools break up around the middle of this month. I then won’t tutor her until schools are back in January.
I will have worked only half a month and be owed half a month’s pay.
Would you message after the last lesson to be paid or wait until the end of the month to be paid?
If you were a parent, when would you expect to pay?
I could do with/would prefer the money after we’ve finished tutoring and not at the end of the month if possible, due to Christmas.
Would it be cheeky to ask for it then?

I would message after the session for payment for December. That's not cheeky, you've done the hours.

Scutterbug · 05/12/2024 21:27

After your last session.

DinosaurMunch · 05/12/2024 21:28

After your last session. Don't leave a big gap

TyreChangeLightOn · 05/12/2024 21:30

I have similar for piano. I prefer to pay in December rather than leaving it until January when the January bill will be arriving too.

Itsdraggingonabit · 05/12/2024 21:36

@TyreChangeLightOn Well it would be the end of this month normally, so i’d message on the last couple of days of the month. But I will finish on the 16th

We had a tutor for DD. It was always cash only the day of each session.
Now it's via a business, I've signed up to X sessions a year and it's a monthly direct debit.

In your circumstances, on the day of the last session send the text saying X amount. He should pay immediately.

notgettinganyyounger · 05/12/2024 21:37

I always paid cash at the start of each lesson

Suitable Payment Timeframes:

  1. Immediately After the Final Lesson – Request payment right after your last session of the month.
  2. The Day Following the Final Lesson – Follow up one day later to ensure professionalism without appearing rushed.
  3. A Few Days After the Final Lesson – Wait 2–3 days to provide a buffer while still prompting payment.
  4. At the End of the Month – Stick to the usual arrangement for consistency if early payment isn’t necessary.

After the last lesson. They'll appreciate not being asked on holiday I would have thought.
If you're worried send the invoice but don't follow up til the end of the month

BusMumsHoliday · 06/12/2024 06:17

Just message saying that you'd like to get your billing wrapped up before the Christmas break so you don't disturb them during the holiday period, so you're requesting X amount for Y hours by the 20th (last Friday before Xmas). Totally normal for pay periods to change around Xmas.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 06/12/2024 06:19

I would expect to hear at and be paid a month in advance

at the minimum I’d expect to be paid prior to session or immediately after

bloodredfeaturewall · 06/12/2024 06:22

any tutor I know is paid in advance. no pay - no lesson.
so yes, prepare the invoice to go out just as you start the last lesson and then revise your pay conditions
