Thread of locations for the first silent vigils for Afghan women and girls being held in the UK this weekend. All vigils are at 4pm on Saturday 7 December 2024 unless otherwise specified.

Here are some organisations helping women and girls in Afghanistan:

Thank you so much for posting this, there's one local to me and I will go to it. I feel so helpless knowing what's happening to women in Afghanistan and that there is so little we can do. But I'm grateful to have the opportunity to do anything.

LondonWeeknd · 05/12/2024 06:38

Thanks for posting, I'll be there and I'm sharing this with everyone I know
💪🏼

northernballer · 05/12/2024 06:42

Thansk for posting, I was unaware of their work. I can't make Saturday but with you in spirit.

BrightNewLife · 05/12/2024 20:03

DM me if anyone going to the Surrey one

PassingStranger · 05/12/2024 21:22

Shame post didn't get more replies.

GreyBlackBay · 05/12/2024 21:32

Can anyone tell me what can be done about the situation? Are any of these organisations going to get anywhere?

I feel like I'm dying insude when I read the horrors. The vigils will hopefully raise public aware and we will put pressure on our government to do SOMETHING but what?

We can't invade their country, we are not at war with them. We could do sanctions, they probably wouldn't work.

It is not just about overthrowing the Taliban, the men of the country are happily going along with this oppression of their women. We would literally have to take out half the country to free these women.

What can be done?

claratheskivvy · 05/12/2024 21:44

No vigil in the NE sadly, but I'll donate to an assistance charity, so thank you for posting a list.

Alexandra2001 · 05/12/2024 21:50

Utterly futile.

According to an Afghan woman who secretly teaches English in Afghanistan, the West needs to stop all aid, as despite it going through NGOs, ends up in the Taliban's hands or their friends.

To correct a pp, she also said that many ordinary Afghan men are not in favour of the almost total restrictions on women but for men to resist means beatings, prison or death.

Needs western Govts to start acting together and pressurising other Muslim states who do have some influence but we have none, we abandoned them

PoissonOfTheChrist · 05/12/2024 22:01

What's the point?

cardibach · 05/12/2024 22:06

Can’t see t(e thread because I’m not on Xitter. Just t(e name of my town doesn’t really help - where can I find out where exactly for each town?
Edit: found it

Sunsetchaser01 · 05/12/2024 22:07

I find it utterly horrifying that anyone can be treated in this way. I was distraught watching the BBC programme showing the atrocities are even worse. The world has become crazy. Thanks for posting the info about the vigils .

Appalonia · 05/12/2024 22:10

It's like watching a living nightmare. How is this allowed to happen? Why won't other Governments DO SOMETHING?

it’s horrific.
we all tried to do something by invading and it did more harm than good.,
i don’t know what the answer is.

Thank you for posting this.

orangewasp · 05/12/2024 22:25

Thanks for posting. No vigil anywhere near me but I have saved the details and will make my first donation on pay day.

Kendodd · 05/12/2024 22:31

Is there a list with locations outside of twitter?

ARainyNightInSoho · 05/12/2024 22:32

PoissonOfTheChrist · 05/12/2024 22:01

What's the point?

Absolutely everything important that needed to be changed started with people asking ‘what’s the point?’

Nothing by itself changes anything, but an accumulation of small actions over time might. Just seeing a photo of women far away doing something to show they have not forgotten you might do something for one woman’s
morale in Afghanistan. Wouldn’t that be worth it?What’s the alternative, do nothing at all?
