Tweens are odd little creatures aren't they?

Highly emotional, contrary, changing like the wind, always hard done by.

As far as he is concerned everyone is always shouting at him (they're not)

And they still do dumb ass kid shit.

How on earth does one navigate this roller coaster?

Mine certainly is. I adore him, but it’s all very high-octane stuff. I just try to ride it out with good humour and a mixture of boundaries and flexibility.

I'm sat watching him eat thinking about how much I love the dramatic little weirdo.

Literally described my 10 year old DD to a tee.

She can't reply to anything you ask her without "but, but, but.....I, I, I with an opened mouth, big eyes and sometimes a slapped thigh.

Then she will come and give me the loveliest cuddle after she's just stubbed her toe on my bed whilst trying to do a no handed somersault on my bed. Lovely Muppet!

MinnieMountain · 05/12/2024 05:36

Ah yes, the emotional outbursts, the arguing (he’d make an excellent lawyer). Then he’ll say how much he loves putting his feet on my bare legs when I read his bedtime story.

DarkForces · 05/12/2024 05:59

They're like toddlers who can talk. All dark moods and sobbing, then cuddles and giggling. It's the constant issues with friends that I struggle with. I'd rather be in my 40s!

Crumpledpapers765 · 05/12/2024 06:06

To me, that describes more teen than tween behaviour; are you sure they are not going through puberty?

Personally, we experienced a bit of relief between eight and fourteen, then as soon as they turned fourteen, all the high jinks began! But I know that's quite late for puberty nowadays.

beetr00 · 05/12/2024 06:17

but don't you all remember your own life at that age?

it baffles that parents seem somewhat unable to relate to the feelings and experiences of their own children 😕

Perhaps the OP was light-hearted though? 🙂

Are you talking about a boy? Girls develop at least 2 years earlier than boys albeit a few girls don’t start to menstruate until about 16. I found tween dd and her friends had very black and white thinking and could not see things from each others pov at all. I described them at the times as like headless chickens. So yes, to toddlers, who could talk. They started doing things they wouldn’t have dreamt of doing 2 years earlier as they’d have considered it dangerous.

I’m taking this as a lighthearted thread @beetr00 .

Yes this!! Dd11 is also now offering me feedback of how i could have improved on my approach with things 😄

VeraVerity · 05/12/2024 06:46

Our tweens were pretty easygoing and sensible. As young teens now on the other hand they are as you describe.

Puberty starts earlier now with girls especially starting to develop, getting their period and reaching adult height at around 12 in a great majority of cases. Has it always been like this?

Yes, lighthearted but no I don't remember acting like that.

The dramatic little weirdo comment was the giveaway 😂😂😂

And a spot on description of a tween/teen 😂

ShamblesRock · 05/12/2024 07:47

Oh yes the glorious mix of toddler tantrums and teen attitude. It's, ummm, fun 😂

This made me 😂. Love it. Dd does similar... why do you expect me to behave like I'm older than I am? Right before demanding unlimited access to the internet.
