to hand a meat cleaver in at the police station?

I know this sounds daft, but I cant think of anything else safe to do with it!

It came with a set of fancy knives I bought some years ago, frankly it scared the crap out of me and with (then) young kids in the house I hid it away. Found it recently in its case and I want rid of it. Its not something I would ever use.

Thing is, normally I would charity shop stuff like that but obviously cant, same with freecycle etc. I cant just chuck it away, not safe. And I dont feel happy putting it in the metal recycling at the tip as people have to sort through that stuff and it is like a razor blade.

Any other ideas?!

Give it to the local butcher.

twohotwaterbottles · 03/12/2024 22:22

Yes please just hand it in at your local police station for safe disposal

maverickfox · 03/12/2024 22:24

My council has knife bins dotted around the area. They are listed on the council website.

CrazyAndSagittarius · 03/12/2024 22:29

You are overthinking this. Ideally give it away to someone you know or to a local college or restaurant (if it's good quality) if they want it. Or put it in the bin or take it to the tip wrapped up in paper and/or cardboard as you would broken glass.

tsmainsqueeze · 03/12/2024 22:32

I took a huge decorative sword to a police station when my boys were little it was my husbands and i did not want it in my house with kids, then years later some shotgun cartridges found after my dad passed.
Both times accepted gratefully by helpful police officers.

MrsClatterbuck · 03/12/2024 22:40

Reading with interest. Dh bought a boning knife years ago don't know why as he never used it. Hate it with a passion. It's hidden at the back of the cupboard and it unfortunately moved house with us. Have thought about the knife amnesty but have never made enquiries but while enquire at my local recycling centre.

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/12/2024 01:23

Thanks all for the information.

For pure convenience sake, the local police station is closer than the tip or the hospital. So that will be my second option.

First option.....i work in a food led pub with chefs. Why did I not think of that?!

I suspect that they will say no as it isnt standard kitchen issue but one of the chefs may want it for home use so I will ask them first.

Thank you all for your tips, really appreciated!

Surely there must be somewhere to get them sharpened? I have a drawer full of blunt knives and they weren't cheap. Well, Sabatier at the very least.

LockForMultiball · 04/12/2024 02:32

Teenagers aren't going round stabbing each other with meat cleavers. It's a tool that can be dangerous if used incorrectly or wielded as a weapon, but so is my cast-iron mincer. (So are a lot of the knives used in stabbings, but I can at least understand feeling concerned about disposing of knives of the type that might be more likely to be diverted to crime.) Selling it or giving it to a charity shop might be difficult, so just do whatever else you'd do with a kitchen tool you don't need. I'm pretty sure I could kill someone with my mincer if I needed to, but I wouldn't have any issue binning/recycling it or (preferably) giving it to a friend. Same with a meat cleaver. It's not going to leap out of the recycling and cleave someone.

There are people you can go to, or who will send you appropriate packaging for you to post your knives to them, sharpen them, and return them. Not cheap, but if the knives are expensive and high quality and you know how to hone them, it might be worth it to get an excellent edge at the right angle for the knife that will last a good while.

There is a company near to me that does sharpening for knives and scissors and other tools. Might be worth a google or asking on your local FB group?

Why don’t you want to have it? It seems strange, ditching a perfectly good kitchen knife.

Because I dont need it, dont want it and dont use it.

Just put in a plastic bin sack and put it in the rubbish bin. They wear protective gloves at the tip.

You could always try using it for a few things first to make sure you really do want to get rid of it. They're good for cutting meat, but you can also use them for things like chopping tough vegetables and easily transferring them to a pot, or crushing garlic with the flat of the blade. If you watch a couple of videos they should show that it can be quite an agile knife when used right. You seem kind of wary of it, as much as having no use for it.

She doesn't want it. Why are you trying to make her change her mind? Do you not think she knows her own mind?

They don't let you take knives on the local bus

DP takes a chainsaw on the bus 3 days a week 🤣 Seriously if it's in your bag then it's fine. Nobody will ever even know!

Thevelvelletes · 04/12/2024 06:12

Wrap the blade in cardboard and tape up with duct tape then bin it.

Roxie99 · 04/12/2024 06:19

PonyPatter44 · 03/12/2024 20:33

If you don't want it, I'll have it. Seriously.

Failing that, wrap it up in newspaper and tape, and chuck it in the knife amnesty bin at your local police station. I don't even know what to say about the person who wouldn't take it on the bus - if you just bought it at john lewis in the city centre, are you saying that you couldn't take it home on the bus?.

I was thinking how does the bus company/driver know you are getting on the bus with knives?

MumonabikeE5 · 04/12/2024 06:31

SpeculativeHoumous · 03/12/2024 19:23

I asked my local council how I should dispose of knives and they said to take them to the tip. The bus company don't want me on the bus with knives so I walked to the knife amnesty bin and put them in there out of desperation

How on earth would the bus driver know what is in your bag?

JingleB · 04/12/2024 09:35

SpeculativeHoumous · 04/12/2024 05:42

I guess because it seems wasteful to throw out a tool.

I use mine as a pizza cutter more than anything, the size and weight is great for that.
The broad flat shape means it’s great for crushing garlic.
Used upside down, it’s good for cracking shellfish (again because of the weight).

If @PyongyangKipperbang wants rid, she’s every right to bin it (recycling bin is fine, magnets collect the metal long before people are sorting)

Binning a perfectly good kitchen tool just seemed a shame.

Now if it was a juicer or a bread maker…

CitiesInDust · 04/12/2024 09:37

I’d just wrap it and put it in the landfill rubbish.

Hyperion100 · 04/12/2024 09:38

blunt it off on a brick and put it in the bin

Well if she knew her own mind she wouldn't need to be on here asking

Personally if it is going to make you this worried just put it in landfill it shouldn't be this hard

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 04/12/2024 09:43

This thread has me giggling. I like the update, chefs or people who like to cook would take it off your hands happily - I wouldn't advertise it online at all though. I'd def offer to chefs, pubs etc if they need or a chef who works for them would like it.
Those asking about sharpening - there are companies online and some even send replacement knives to use while they sharpen yours! I can't live without 3 of my knives tbh
