To think the NHS Health Check (for over 40s) can be done at home?

I just had that health check done and it was a total waste of time!

The nurse told me that my BMI would skew everything (and that it was due to my muscle mass), she just ticked some boxes, added some data, took my blood pressure and then told me I was low risk and that I should ignore the other advice.

She was also surprised when I told her I was not white! (Which I'm.not but I know I can be white passing).

It would have been quicker to just go in, take my booo pressure and do the rest from my phone. Would have had exactly the same result, and no waste of resources!

I've just had a text about one but the link was to one specific time on one specific date which I can't do and there is no way to book a different date or time. The reception insist you can only book it online. So I will just have to tell myself for my middle aged weight gain and hope that my lower than average cholesterol hasn't shot up since my last check 5 years ago. I think my dh has a blood pressure monitor so I could check that at home. Never mind, I do have the dentist tomorrow so he can stab me in the gum and then tell me off when they inevitably bleed. Then he can bang on about not eating sugar despite the fact I only have one filling, caused by a cherry stone not sugar.

I already have two chronic health conditions so last thing I need is a letter after my 40th birthday next year inviting me for more checks. I'm depressed enough about turning 40 as it is.

I had one, though on reflection it was a bit useless - the only test was blood pressure, which I'd recently had done (birth control) No blood tests or anything like that, just weighed me and a general questionnaire about lifestyle.
I can see that they might be a way of identifying issues early for some, although I imagine the people they most want to see are the ones who ignore the invites!

I carry these out everyday at work and it's a shame to see how it varies across the country. As a minimum a renal, cholesterol and a glucose/hba1c should be done for bloods, BP, waist measurement, exercise, family history, alcohol, smoking and diet should be discussed as well as ethnicity. I then follow up when bloods are back and give qrisk score too. 90% of patients have other health queries so I can normally point them in the right direction/book a GP appts for them. I've diagnosed 2 people with type 2 diabetes, 1 with hypertension in the last week who were both asymptomatic. I think they are worthwhile doing but probably the people who really need one are the ones who ignore the invites unfortunately

I had one of these some years ago when I was in my late 50s. The results came back showing that I had high cholesterol and was overweight. I pointed out to the proverbial bored HCA that both of these things were as a direct result of the surgerily's continued failure to treat my underactive thyroid. I have declined an invitation to a second checkup.

That would be fine if this wasn’t the first time I was hearing they were a thing…

It is worth doing though. They found out that not only was I in the pre-diabetic range, I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well.

I'm late 50s and I've not had one either. I'm on medication that increases cholesterol. I also have a progressive neurological condition and asthma.

It might be because I'm a "difficult patient" (on my notes). I never realised asking for a referral for a second opinion as the doctor told me HRT was only for women wanting to attract younger men/menopause only lasts 2 years would make me so.

I was told NO to a cholesterol test as my DP's is fine.

I'm not holding my breath for an invite any time soon.

It's probably because you have other conditions I think they are only for people who don't?

Is this UK wide or just NHS England?

Only in England currently.

Annierhys · 03/12/2024 21:58

I've not read all of the responses but wanted to quickly say, please give the feedback to your local authority. This is a commissioned service and when done properly can be really effective.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/12/2024 22:08

I was invited at 40 and 45 but didn't go. I have a needle phobia and asked if I could have everything except the blood tests and was told no, it was all or nothing.

To be honest, if it means having to spend time with the nurses at my GP surgery I'm not interested.

BlackJacktheDog · 03/12/2024 22:15

44 here and never been invited / never heard of these before.

But we do have scales, blood pressure and blood glucose readers at home so not sure how much value one would be?

Doitrightnow · 03/12/2024 22:30

I'm nearly 44 and never heard of this!
