You don't choose to go to co-op

My hubby tells me he loves it but I just think it's expensive and never has what I want, except wine 😂 Am I missing something!?

To people saying member prices are not ethical, the Co-operative Society WAS SET UP on the basis that it was for members. Back in the day you gave your Co-op membership number at the till for whatever benefits. I can still remember my mother’s.

You still do that but it’s an app.

Candleabra · 03/12/2024 06:48

I like the coop. Their own brands are good, the fair trade chocolate is amazing.

Piggywaspushed · 03/12/2024 06:49

I have three Co Ops near me to stop off at but would never do a bigger shop there, or Tesco Express or Sainsburys Local but some less mobile people do have no choice so I wish local stores would be fair on prices.

As a side note, Co Op mince pies are the best supermarket mince pie!

BigFatLiar · 03/12/2024 06:50

Growing up it was our only shop. They also did furniture and clothes. Unless you had a car or were willing to take a run in the bus to the nearest town you got everything from the local co-op. (They even buried you)

I can't see why anyone would choose co-op over waitrose, apart from on price. Certainly not on quality or range of products. May have to give that macci cheese a try though.

Well, being as we don't have a Waitrose anywhere near us (think boat then very long car journey)......Coops are often located in quite remote places, away from other supermarkets. Ours is the only grocery shop in pur small town, other than a hideously priced local shop (which also has mostly awful staff).

mitogoshigg · 03/12/2024 06:51

Coops are in locations where there isn't a full size supermarket and ours is open until 10pm even on Sundays, that's why I nip in there but i wouldn't do a full shop

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 03/12/2024 06:51

Haha, so true. They're always conveniently located though. I go in for milk and come out £20 down! They do interesting crisp falvours and bakery items and their wine selection is pretty decent for such a small store!

I load offers onto the app but have my Coop card linked to it.

Sea salt!

Those crisps are amazing. Coop is my sat night treat place nice salt and vinegar crisps and a good bottle of wine.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 03/12/2024 06:53

Co op prices are insane but they take advantage of the fact they are in places without other shops. (I don’t get the ones in busy places - prices are easily £2-3 more than other shops)

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 03/12/2024 06:54

Love our local Co - end of day discounts are really good.

Elphamouche · 03/12/2024 06:55

We are DESPERATE if we go into a co-op. They’re shite 😂

ByCraftyLemonStork · 03/12/2024 06:57

I also really like that. Although things are a bit expensive, you can visit occasionally to browse around.

Actually, they're pretty good in many locations.

mitogoshigg · 03/12/2024 06:58

Ours stocks Cook meals, also alcohol, bakery, sandwiches, bit of fresh fruit and vegetables plus bacon and sausages, otherwise it's just crisps and the like, most of the customers are the well heeled apartment dwellers that surround it whereas us in the houses are closer to Waitrose and Lidl. Plenty of people don't really cook around here by their own admittance. It's right by my favourite pub and there's a steady stream of people popping in there about 9.45pm from the pub

WillowTit · 03/12/2024 06:59

i like their bread, it is handy

like other places, our local pub became a coop. the only shop in the village

Fair enough and it's the same where my in laws live, but you're not choosing to go to a co-op if it's the only option.

Maybe you're kinda agreeing with @yourdelilah and me that you don't choose to go to a co-op. They are often located in quite remote places where there is no other choice.

RareMaker · 03/12/2024 07:00

I don't. Awful to staff (I worked there, witnessed continual sexual harassment and HQ didn't give a damn) and when i worked there they used to sell food that had defrosted!

BackOnTheAntibiotics · 03/12/2024 07:02

noblegiraffe · 02/12/2024 22:56

The co-op nearby is ludicrously priced, like absolutely batshit.
There was a box of cereal that was £2.50 in Iceland, £3.80 in Sainsbury's and £4.40 in the co-op.

This.

We had a huge one near us in an isolated town with a population on v low income.

Lidl opened (after the Co-op fought the PP for years) and they died on their arse overnight. Shocking prices! Not a price tag but a finger up prices. They deserve to be gone.

I have a co op less than 10 minutes drive but would need to go for about 30 minutes to find a waitrose and a small one at that, can you really not see why if I need a loaf of bread I'd go to the co op?

Tell me you dont live rurally without ......

SoManyTshirts · 03/12/2024 07:06

My two nearest free cash points are in Co-ops. I do my main shop in Lidl but go to the co-op for teabags, milk and emergencies. Local shop and Tesco express are both closer but focus on alcohol and crisps, coop does fresh veg and a little meat plus a reasonable grocery selection.

Annoyed about the differential pricing and loss of dividends though.

ZenNudist · 03/12/2024 07:06

It's so expensive. They do seem to try and go slightly nicer end of the market. Wine selection is good. I'm with you. If I had other options I'd go elsewhere.

NightIbble · 03/12/2024 07:06

I really like them and there are 2 within 10 minutes walk from us, also my ds is autistic and their frankfurters are part of his limited diet so would really miss them!

I can see why you go to a co op which is because you have no other choice within a 30 minute drive.

To me that is not really making a positive choice towards shopping at co- op but more making a choice away from a 30 minute drive for a loaf of bread.

For you.

They’re utter shit here.
