To think access to the Internet should be free?

PassingStranger · 02/12/2024 16:43

Why do we have to pay something that we all need to use now.
Should Internet be free?

Does anyone remember in it's infancy you paid a subscription and for dealing up too. It might have been so much a minute?

It's such a big part of our life now. Even benefits have to be claimed online?

Please read my post properly. There's an article by Birmingham University to make the Internet a human right.

Can't people read.💤

Life should be free!

TaxDirector · 02/12/2024 17:32

Before i get to internet being free I'd start with

  • water
  • food
  • housing
  • heating

Etc etc.

You can probably use internet for free at your local library.

TheLimeHedgehog · 02/12/2024 17:37

@PassingStranger Infrastructure and all the interconnectivity of various data centers that provide connectivity don't come free.

A bit more knowledge is needed from you OP

Someone has written about free Internet being a human right. Will see if I can find the link.

Yes, I can read but we didn't know what you wanted us to be reading.Confused
First you've mentioned about a uni article and you haven't posted the link yet.

'Someone has written about it being a human right' isn't a very compelling argument.

MissRoseDurward · 02/12/2024 17:46

I know what you mean but as long as libraries and hubs offer free internet access so that people can apply for benefits, I think it’s ok as it is.

some town centres and shopping centres have WiFi available.
some public transport - buses and trains and major railway stations
some shops - M&S and Waterstones are two that I know of.
many pubs, cafes and restaurants.

anyone who lives in a town and has a suitable device should be able to access wifi without paying for it. But it's not free - someone somewhere is paying.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/12/2024 17:51

I agree it's become an essential serice, but as PPs have said so are utilities/energy and we expect to pay for those

As for "Birmingham University's report says ...", it's the kind of ideology I'd expect from those involved in academia. A fond idea no doubt, but not really one which intersects with the real world

Edited to add the Birmingham Uni's piece: https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/news/2023/internet-access-must-become-human-right-or-we-risk-ever-widening-inequality

Beautifulbouquet · 02/12/2024 17:55

The lack of logic from OP here is severe!

OP are you saying that all things needed for a convenient life should be free for all humans in the world? Presumably including the devices needed to access the Internet too?

Or do you think people should pay for food and water and heating and houses but just have the Internet for free?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 02/12/2024 17:58

This was proposed in Labours 2019 manifesto. They were going to nationalise broadband provision and roll out fast fibre across the country, free at the point of use. People voted for Boris Johnson instead.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/12/2024 17:58

There is a difference between having the right to access something and the right to have it free at the point of use.

Tumbler2121 · 02/12/2024 17:59

I do think that basic internet should be part of what we get from the BBC, we have little choice but to pay for it, however anyone without internet is missing out on Iplayer, which is pretty useful.

in the same way we don't pay to use radio waves

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/12/2024 18:07

Ummm...... you absolutely do pay to use radio spectrum. Paid your mobile phone bill recently?

Our reading comprehension is just fine, thanks.

Your writing on the other hand...

As for human rights - food, clean water, shelter, warmth and facilities for good hygiene are all a little more pressing and no one's handing those out for free. I repeat, have you not encountered capitalism before?

LeggyLinda · 02/12/2024 18:26

In its early days the internet was free (to a certain extent). I mean you still had to pay the connection charges, but the content, services and communication platforms that utilised it were free.

I’d love to go back to a time like that where we are not constantly bombarded with ads, sponsored links that direct you to god knows where. But free access is never going to be possible.

If anything, I would like it to be more accessible and safe. Especially as these days so much seems to be dependent upon it - banking, shopping, government services, etc. I’d love it if there was something simple that allowed vulnerable/non-tech fluent people use it. I work in IT field and have relatives that fall into that category. So looked into it - every possible solution adds either complexity or cost.

I love the new interconnected world (though preferred it when it was niche). But now that it is mainstream, it needs to be usable by the masses.

with Christmas approaching, I’ve seen complaints ranging from no longer being able to browse a shopping catalogue through to not being able to check a utility bill from elderly friends. All of them have no connectivity issues - they have and can afford the infrastructure. So the lack of free internet is not the problem. It is the usability and unfamiliarity of this “new world” being the norm that is the problem.

I bet I’m not the only person who spends a large portion of my life frustratingly helping partners/parents/grandparents or disabled relatives achieve the most basic of tasks. Can’t even get a doctor’s appointment or repeat prescription here without an app. Smartphones are not currently compatible with elderly/stroke survivors for example.

Just because they write it, even if it is on the internet, doesn't make it an indisputable fact.

For people saying "capitalism" - you pay for things under communism too, and usually in more than just money.

Vaxtable · 02/12/2024 19:03

How do you expect the cost of laying cables, providing hubs and keeping the show on the road to be covered? A magic money tree?

He calls for public authorities to provide internet access free of charge for those unable to afford it, as well as providing training in basic digital skills training for all citizens and protecting online access from arbitrary interference by states and private companies.

That all sounds reasonable and quite different from what OP seems to be suggesting.

StMarie4me · 02/12/2024 19:14

PeloMom · 02/12/2024 16:44

We all need water, electricity etc too and have to pay for those. How’s internet different?

Exactly!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 02/12/2024 19:18

I absolutely agree that the internet is essential nowadays. But how to cover the cost of it without charging individuals is another question. We don't get free water, shelter, heating or food, all of which are also essential.

Isn't that what adblockers are for?

Someone still has to pay for it. Where are the public authorities getting the money?

bloodredfeaturewall · 02/12/2024 19:36

why?
for the price of a landline you can get a sim only contract with pretty much unlimited data & minutes.

you can get this in many libraries.
