To hate modern cars?

Just got a new car after having our previous one for about 9 years. It’s a disaster. Too damn clever for its own good with automatic everything. The problem is that all these automatic features don’t work properly to the point where I think they’re actually making the car more dangerous. Examples:

a) Automatic headlines on, driving at night on the motorway, car changes from dipped headlights to full beam despite there being oncoming traffic on the other side of the motorway.

b) Driving along a residential road at the speed limit of 20mph, late at night. No other road users on the road, no pedestrians, cats etc. The anti collision system does an emergency stop for no reason.

c) Car randomly beeps warnings with no visual warning light/symbol/message so I have no idea what it’s warning me about. Car manual doesn’t explain.

AIBU to want to go back to a simpler car without all these magical gadgets? DH insists all cars are like this now. I know I can turn off automatic lights (and have done so) but I’m thinking I need to turn off all the other safety features if this is how the car is going to behave.

I totally hear you. Cars are no longer cars but mobile technology and they are all the worse for it.

Try and disable as much as you can like lane assist etc.

Cars havent really been cars since mid 2010s.

Gone are the days when I planned and looked forward to a new car. They're technological nightmares. Mine keeps applying the brakes for no reason, thinking it can sense a stationary or slowing vehicle ahead

FuckItItsFine · 02/12/2024 00:32

My current car is 17 years old (old enough to drive 😄) and I’m holding onto it as long as possible. Just passed another MOT 🥳

DancingHippos · 02/12/2024 00:36

Which car have you got OP?
Guessing it's electric too?

EmeraldRoulette · 02/12/2024 00:43

Yes they're not fun anymore but

more seriously, the emergency stop in particular makes me think that there's a fault in your new car?

Nat6999 · 02/12/2024 00:49

I'm hankering about buying an original Mini, no technology, just an engine & 4 wheels.

AmusedFish · 02/12/2024 01:05

Gimme a 90s dark blue estate jaguar with 5 seats and a cd player any day of the week but god knows where I would park it !! maybe a private field

Catsmere · 02/12/2024 01:15

Blimey, that sounds awful. I'm very glad to have my 2004 Corolla, all it does is squawk if I forget to turn the lights off before I turn off the ignition or open the door before I take the key out!

MysteriousUsername · 02/12/2024 02:25

The anti collision braking is the worst thing. White lines in the road - brake! Reversing into a blade of grass - brake! Nothing untoward at all - brake!

The random beeps are usually telling me the Lane assist isn't working (because it's raining or icy) but random beeps when you're driving are a worry.

Things I do like - reversing cameras or sensors. Sat nav - how did people manage in the olden days with paper maps. Grin Air con - fantastic. Music - being able to use Spotify instead of having to listen to the one Queen cassette the car came with.

I miss the man with the red flag, walking in front. 😕

I've currently got a hire car as my three year old Hyundai i10 failed its MOT, and is still waiting for a part. It's absolutely bloody huge. And so fiddly to
Change simple things. Instead of just turning a dial to turn the temperature down. You press a switch and the touch screen comes on, which takes eyes off the road.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2024 03:32

My little car has a reversing camera. And a large window. This beast is really high, with a tiny back window. And sensors. I was trying to
Reverse in a car park yesterday, and the visibility was absolutely dreadful. I couldn't see what was behind me at all.

Meadowfinch · 02/12/2024 03:39

Good luck finding a car that isn't over-engineered.

I have a Volvo which also decided to activate its emergency braking for absolutely no reason. Three lanes of empty dual carriage way ahead of me. Unfortunately the man behind me thought I was trying to make him crash and he went mental. Got out of his car, screaming & threatening, banging his fists on the side window and windscreen. Not fun. I am not the only woman this has happened to.

I wish car manufacturers would consider the safety of their female customers before they install all this crap. At least make it possible to switch the systems off. I bought a Volvo because it was meant to be safe. Now I can't wait to be rid of it. I just don't trust it.

I like the heated windscreen though. That's actually useful.

The warning sound with no indicator of what it means, might be that you are approaching a speed camera. Mine does that.

Maps were easy. You worked out how to get to the town, M4, A308 etc. Then detailed for the last few miles.

It just meant, if you were going somewhere new, you had to look it up before you left home.

TheSilentSister · 02/12/2024 04:25

I had a brand new Mini recently (as a hire car) and it was awful. Once I worked out how to start it, I only got out of 1st gear before it stopped again. I had no idea what was going on. I'm good with technology but this thing baffled me.
Hated it. It scared me. Wouldn't have wanted it if it was given to me.

Frenchyq25 · 02/12/2024 04:30

I've been driving a 21 plate id3 for the last 3 years and it really does take the fun out of driving....the only plus points is that I can defrost it while sat in my house by using an app. I bought a 63 plate zafira yesterday and looking forward to driving a car that doesn't shout at me if we drive passed someone walking on the pavement.

Or that it's a hyundai

Catsmere · 02/12/2024 04:34

This confirms my intention to stick with older, used cars should I ever have to replace mine!

Maps were fucking awful.

Having to pull over and then try and memorise directions to a street in an unknown town, or ask people. Who hadn't a clue.

Hateam · 02/12/2024 04:39

My car beeps and buzzes at me constantly. Lights keep flashing for no obvious reason.
It's like having sex with R2D2.
Very confusing

Before menopause maps were easy!! I can barely wade through the fog now to memorise how to get to my own bloody bathroom.

loved my old Tom Tom until it died, hate my inbuilt car sat nav.

garlictwist · 02/12/2024 04:47

My car is so old it still has handles to wind down the windows so this is all news to me. I am thinking of getting a new car next year but could not be arsed with this.

I hired a car in France this summer that kept beeping at me all the time. I had no idea why or what it meant but it was really distracting when you're already trying to navigate a new country on the wrong side of the road.

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/12/2024 04:51

My car has all that stuff and I've switched it all off.

I have the headlights to auto switch on/off, but the facility to go from dipped to full beam is off.

Sirzy · 02/12/2024 05:16

I am hoping that soon companies realise many of us just want a car we are in control of that gets from A to B and go back to making simple versions!

similar to when Nokia went back to doing the brick phone.

it’s not going to happen but I can dream!

Nottodaygoaway · 02/12/2024 05:26

I don't have a car or even a licence but if I did learn this is what concerns me, all the buttons and tech I don't need. It's like buying the latest iPhone, lots of new features the (usually male) designers think we need but really don't.

I took a ride in my DBs car recently and it was like being on board the Millennium Falcon.
