Beauty consultant made me feel like crap 💩

Prettydisgustingactually · 01/12/2024 20:01

So I’ve been feeling a bit crap about myself lately, almost 57, skin looking a bit rubbish etc so decided I’d cheer myself up and invest in a new foundation.

Took myself off to the JL beauty department to face the 100 + various options. I’d decided to choose a couple I liked, get samples to try at home in my own lighting and then go back and buy. I don’t have tons of money and don’t want to get the wrong one. I went over to the guerlain counter and asked for help colour matching. She asked if I was wearing foundation and asked me to remove it which I did. She tried the colours on my chin and asked me to choose. She then put it straight on my face, no cream under it, just straight on. I mentioned it going on better with something under and she said “Yeah I suppose I could have but it doesn’t matter” She put it on half of my face (not especially gently) and showed me the mirror. When I asked her if she was doing the other side she said no as that’s classed as a makeup session and she’d have to charge me. She then handed me the sponge snd said “Try and spread it over if you like” and walked off. She put a pin head amount into a plastic container, wrote on it and handed it to me.

If I’d asked her to show less interest she couldn’t have done. I walked away with a half made up face and no eyebrows as she’d wiped them off, and went straight home as I looked like crap and felt really silly. No upselling of other products, no attempt to talk to me at all. I really feel as though if I’d have been a 30 something beauty, she’d have made more effort.

AIBU in thinking this was really poor customer service?

Entitled ass 😂😂😂 so funny! Entitled for expecting good customer service. Run along to annoy another poster, you’re boring me @PuddlesPityParty Theres always a few Katie Hopkins types on these threads who come along to annoy everyone….bless you! Get some sleep Mrs Grumpy

You’re ridiculous. How can you call me Mrs grumpy when you’ve spent your evening moaning about a shopping experience that in reality wasn’t even that bad 😂

IncessantNameChanger · 01/12/2024 23:07

I went a Estee Lauder counter in a local indi department store and had a far better experience. She took my makeup off, asked to try three on the back of my hand to look at, then she tried all three on my face, choose for me, put serum and primer on, full foundation then blusher so I looked presentable. I had a little tube filled up to try for ten days and a colour match details card. I look like a cave troll BTW. Try somewhere else. Boots was very busy today but very helpful too. Keep trying

Another person, who works as a sales assistant😬 Aren’t you supposed to treat all customers the same.

Why do you think that? I’ve not worked in retail since I was 17 but nice try.

FoxtonFoxton · 01/12/2024 23:10

Have you looked at IL Makiage? I've always found their foundation matches to be good, and I think you can try the products at home first.

Freeyourminds · 01/12/2024 23:02

@TryingDry When you shop in store, it’s supposed to be part of the service, irrelevant as to whether you buy any products, make-up you can try, to get the best colour match, particularly if there aren’t any samples.
If this isn’t the case, customers may as well shop online.

I think customer service when you just walk in on the high street is sadly a thing of the past. I worked in hospitality most of my adult life and service is more important there than in retail. I worked with some former retail workers when I worked in some higher end restaurants and some of the stories I heard about high street retail were wild. Customers taking a shit on the changing room floors, shoplifters just walking in, throwing shelves worth of stock into a bag and walking out again, so many more. The general public have gotten so much worse, so I do think retail workers are responding in kind.

It isn't ideal, or what you would like your shopping experience to be, but dealing with the general public and their antics all day and also making a very low wage wouldn't inspire a lot of people to provide top notch service.

I'm not saying that's OK, but it's systemic rather than specific to this particular worker

Fannyfiggs · 01/12/2024 23:11

@EmotionalSupportPotato you should probably change your name to just Potato.

@Prettydisgustingactually maybe start a new thread in style and beauty? You might get some more good recommendations/advice?

I havent read everyone's replies yet but I just wanted to say that was a really dreadful way for the Guerlain woman to treat you. I remember when I was around 19 years old I went to the Estee Lauder counter and the woman there took my makeup off to try a foundation on my skin and said "my goodness, your skin is all different tones isn't it" (in quite a huffy tone) which I was well aware of and which made me feel like absolute 💩 I was actually quite a pretty teenage girl so I'm not sure age has anything to do with it, just some people have no people skills.

Elf36 · 01/12/2024 23:14

JustWhatIAlwaysWanted · 01/12/2024 20:14

I'd email Guerlain and tell them you had a terrible customer service experience at this counter and it's put you off buying from them. Those jobs require you to be upbeat, supportive, encouraging, and if you can't manage that then move to a different type of retail. Meanwhile, do try Boots. Their hyperluminous foundation is really good for mature skin and very reasonably priced.

This. And put in a written complaint with John Lewis too. Let her be told!

It's got nothing to do with age or style etc. She behaved badly and didn't do her job. This is how she will be with everyone.

MounjaroUser1233 · 01/12/2024 23:15

Prettydisgustingactually · 01/12/2024 22:46

@MounjaroUser1233
I’m sorry to hear that happened to you. I know people are probably thinking “wow! Get a life” but it really does affect your self esteem. I mean let’s face it most of these girls are stunning with perfect figures and skin, so you’re already feeling a bit inferior.

i am definitely going to complain. Maybe she will think next time she makes someone feel rubbish.

Thank you xx

Yes I think that these counters do seem to hire very pretty, younger women so I was already feeling fat and middle-aged in comparison. I'd like to be able to say these feeling of negativity don't affect me, but they do of course 😣

I really felt like she was literally laughing at me, in a kind of don't-touch-what-you-cant-afford sort of way. I only wanted some stuff for my skin! ☹

Freeyourminds · 01/12/2024 23:15

Prettydisgustingactually · 01/12/2024 23:12

I’ve never heard of them tbh but will take a look.

It’s a good brand, think it’s only online though
If you’re not happy with the foundation you can just send it back, no hassle refund.

Elf36 · 01/12/2024 23:16

And go back in and try with someone else. This is a her problem not a you problem - don't let it hold you back! 🔥

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 01/12/2024 23:16

What a miserable experience. I agree that it's better to try it on your face rather than your hand because face skin is a different colour, but she should have explained that she couldn't cover your whole face and got your permission before going ahead, then given you the means to remove the leftover foundation.
I had a rather similar experience in my late forties at Selfridges. I told the woman that my normally pale skin was getting flushed and was there a foundation unlikely to irritate my sensitive skin which could minimise the redness? She said with a look of total boredom 'You need a blue base', and handed me a tube of something gigantically expensive. I said no thanks and walked out.
Can't see the point of being so rude to older women! I really wanted a solution and wouldn't have minded paying quite a lot for the right product.

Why are you just repeating an (unfunny) joke the OP made? IRL, OP is the Katie Hopkins type - kicking up a fuss about a load of nonsense and victimising herself.

PeloMom · 01/12/2024 23:28

at selfridges and JL if I wanted a little bit more than a little bit on a patch of my face was classified as ‘makeover’ and I was expected to spend a minimum amount (equivalent of 2-3 not cheap products). Otherwise I was expected to clean myself.

I think you unfortunately got unlucky with a very rude girl, maybe it was her last day on the job and she had checked out etc but still no excuse!

I've had great experiences with Charlotte Tilbury before!

whoactuallyreallycares · 01/12/2024 23:34

Email JL and the brand to complain. Awful customer service, it’s literally their job to try & upsell on everything and she didn’t even try! Sorry she made you feel rubbish.
