Unwashable Vinted item stinking of cigarette smoke

Hi. I bought a new and unworn pair of UGG slippers on Vinted, as a Christmas present for my teen. I gave them a cursory glance on arrival, as I was going out and didn't want the seller to have to wait for her money (so accepted the purchase).
Looking at them properly, they are absolutely reeking of cigarette smoke. They still have their box, so what could I shove in there to make them smell nice? Maybe some of those wee Lenor scent booster beads.
Any other ideas?
Thanks.

I would have thought you’d be better off getting them outside in fresh air a few times.

Bicarbonate of soda absorbs smells, so I would try that first, before trying to mask the smell. Could you put them in a plastic box with a bowl of bicarbonate of soda, failing that, a tied bin liner?

Tea tree oil, works for sticky trainers

Id get a bag full of bicarb and leave them in it for a week rather than try to cover up the smell.

Stick them in the freezer for an hour.

Bicarbonate of soda is great for smoke smell. I had that when I bought a soft toy from a charity shop once and it stunk of smoke. Put it in a freezer bag sprinkled with the bicarbonate and left it for 2-3 days. I then shook it all out and the smell was gone.

Thanks all. So just to be clear, is it enough to pop a small dish of bicarbonate of soda in the slipper box? Or does it actually have to be sprinkled on the slippers themselves? 😬

This was my initial thought, but I'm in Scotland and don't know how the weather is going to be from one minute to the next.
Damp suede, anyone? Grin

I’d get a Neutradol ball for £1 (Savers or some supermarkets) and pop it in a box with the slippers for a few days. They seem to take the scent away without just masking it with a more powerful one.

RandomMess · 01/12/2024 17:35

The box will smell too so I would ditch that tbh.

Or if you are desperate to wrap them up in the box. Defumigate the slippers then seal them in a plastic bag before putting them back in the box.

Genius. I'll try that first as the non-messy option.

An empty coffee packet is excellent for getting rid of strong smells.
