To expect a baby food company to conduct a REAL investigation into a foreign object found in their food and not lie to me about the fact that they've done one?

I really don't think so.

Two weeks ago I found something in DS2's baby food. He nearly choked on it.

I contacted the company and they told me what to do with it and sent me some pacakging to send it back to them. They said they have never before had this happen.

I have just gone back to work and in my general crap way haven't yet sent it back to them. In the meantime I have this morning had a detailed email from them explaining that they have thoroughly investigated and conducted tests and told me that it was just part of an ingredient. They told me that they've contacted the provider and changed their production method.

Clearly a lie since its sitting in front of me waiting to be posted.

I'm so cross that they clearly just intended to fob me off!

That is quite intensely crap.

Might be worth local media. Did the 'thing' look particularly gross?

blinkingthreetimes · 29/04/2008 14:50

I would ask them to send you a letter confirming this fact then complain to trading standards.

OverMyDeadBody · 29/04/2008 14:51

They could have done a detailed investigation and concluded it was just part of an ingredient without actually seeing the foreign object though, so it's not necessarily a lie.

I don't think they're trying to fob you off, just keep you up to date. Baby food production has such rigorous legislation and rules surrounding it that they would be able to trace every step of production.

What do you think the foreign object was?

Hecate · 29/04/2008 14:51

Trading standards? Local paper? What company are they?

CantSleepWontSleep · 29/04/2008 14:51

Egg all over their faces then! Media sounds like a good plan. Make sure you take photos of it before you send it off.

OverMyDeadBody · 29/04/2008 14:52

what babyfood company was it?

CitroenDrivingFootballMum · 29/04/2008 14:52

this happened to me a couple of years ago - almost exactly what you said they wrote. i HAD sent off the foreign object but i was 95% sure it was what i thought i was and NOT an ingredient.

i let it go as was 38 wks pg and really couldn't be arsed, but def argue back.gd luck.

OverMyDeadBody · 29/04/2008 14:53

They are most probably not lying. Don't contact trading standards or media yet, but send them the object.

Seriously, they will have done a thorough investigation, with or without your object.

JennsterSlugSlayer · 29/04/2008 14:55

Send half of it to them and say the other half is in the hands of your solicitor

mummyjaguar · 29/04/2008 15:03

I won't name them but it's a high end organic company. Unfortunately the only brand ds2 will eat!

I immediately sent back a response from my work email address (I'm a solicitor) expressing my concern.

The email from them begins with thanking me for returning the item to them and explaining that they had conducted tests on it - so whilst I accept that they could have conducted a limited investigation they are clearly not telling the truth about having done tests on it.

It's a piece of tough string like material. To be honest I suspect it is part of an ingredient and I suggested that to them myself but it appears that they have jumped on my suggestion and used it to get rid of me.

maybe this object got into the whole batch and they had a number of customers send in bits, after all it's likely the whole batch was contaminated, so they where able to carry out an investigation without your object and are therefore not lying?

Sorry if I sould like I'm defending them, but it would not be in their interests to lie about this, it's a very serious matter, and chances are the whole batch was ruined. This could be very serious for them.

It happened a few years ago with another organic babyfood supplier, but with plastic.

mummyjaguar · 29/04/2008 15:24

possibly

I am still waiting to hear from a Dutch company that supplies Tesco with nuts. I found a piece of gravel - looked exactly like a pistachio - which broke a filling!
Will prob never hear anything back. Have ignored emails so far.
