For context
DH and I have no children and have very small families, we are lucky enough to be fairly comfortable financially not that we have a big disposable income but money is not a huge worry.

We now have our first nephew , but I have no idea how much we should spend at Christmas or his birthday? Any guidance would be very appreciated

For a baby I'd buy something for about £20. As he gets older, maybe a bit more.

Looseloose · 29/11/2024 14:02

Spend what ever your comfortable with, however keep in mind you may have more neices and nephews in the future and therefore will become more expensive.
For what it's worth I spend £20-30 on mine. My siblings don't buy for my dc but if they did it would be more about it being thoughtful/appropriate than the cost.

TipsyKoala · 29/11/2024 14:05

£20ish although I’d probably spend a bit more if I only had one

Rocknrollstar · 29/11/2024 14:40

£20 sounds fine but how close are you to the parents and how much money do they have? It might be nice to ask them what they would like you to buy. Say to them , we want to spend £X, what do you need?

Nogaxeh · 29/11/2024 15:02

Ask the child's parents. My youngest nephew's parents were very clear they didn't want any physical gifts for his first birthday as they already had plenty of stuff in the house.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 29/11/2024 15:04

I'd start with £20 and work up in future years if you want to.

The problem with going higher is if they have a bunch more kids you'll feel obligated to spend the same on all of them, every year and then it spirals.

TheTreeLightsAreFuckingMeOffNow · 29/11/2024 19:35

If you're financially comfortable I'd say £20 is a bit tight. I'd go with £50.

Whatsitreallylike · 29/11/2024 19:52

I’d look at this differently and think along the lines of what you’d like to buy them. Any range of £20-£60 is fine for comfortable couple with one nephew. I wouldn’t set yourself a budget and work backwards, just try and think of something they might like/need and go from there

Thank you for all the replies you’ve all helped, his Mum has list of what he wants /needs so will just choose if there

When we had our first niece we spent approx £50 on her then when the next few came along the money we spent on each decreased. We now have 9 nieces and nephews and spend approx £20 on each of them.

Allfur · 01/12/2024 08:42

£20? Although i don't expect any of my kids aunts and uncles to get them any thing.
