To confront sellers who pulled out last minute

We were meant to exchange tomorrow, completing next Friday 6th, but the sellers pulled out last minute. "Changed their minds" apparently. The full story of this purchase is long and pretty wild, the sellers have been chaos from the day we put in our offer.

We need to leave our rented flat at the end of December as our tenancy is ending and our landlord wants to sell in the New Year. So we now have nowhere to live, and have wasted a ton of money on surveys and a solicitor.

Can I go round to theirs and ask for some contribution towards the costs of their "changed minds?"

When I tried to buy in Scotland many years ago, you had to have a survey done before you could put an offer in. There were 14 offers went in for the house, every one of those having had to pay for their own surveys - crazy! I think it's changed slightly in that you buy into the home buyer's report that the seller has to have done by law rather than pay for a survey. You have to put your best offer in, as they have sealed bids. After paying for 2 surveys and losing out, we decided not to buy in Scotland.

The home seller deals with a home report in Scotland, onus is on them prior to selling. You'd be much better off buying in Scotland, once you navigate the closed bid system.

Yes, the home report is a huge improvement. I still don't like the closed bids. At the time we were looking to buy, certain parts of the city could go up to 50% over the asking price.

This happened to us years ago. We were living with my parents and dh and dm were at loggerheads. Also had 2dc. We were desperate to move and the sellers seemed the same. They pulled out last minute and we later found out they'd done the same thing 2 or 3 times before! We then rushed into buying another house and that was a bit of a nightmare as we didn't really check it over properly. Didn't bother bargaining just paid the full asking price.

they didn’t do anything illegal

I realise I'm a lone voice but I would go round - and have, in similar circumstances.

Obviously not to be aggressive or threatening, and in the knowledge that they are allowed to do it and may think they have good reasons for it.

But why shouldn't they have to look you in the eye and explain why they've behaved so badly?

In my case I asked the estate agent if there was a reason - because a bereavement or similar would be understandable - and was told that they'd decided to try for a better offer in the spring.

So yes I did go round. I was very pleasant but enjoyed it and it gave me some closure.

@icecreamsundaeno5 I said the same pages ago.
Exactly the same , not to be aggressive but to bring home that there are consequences.
That makes two of us .

Life sometimes happens and they might not tell you. Please don't contact them. My neighbour who was amazing friend too and only in her 40s was selling her house to move a village away so she could have room for her parents. The day before exchange she had a brain bleed and about two months later died. Her buyers could not have been nicer. Honestly so glad my neighbour choose them to buy her house. They had to wait for probate which took months and we understanding towards her parents who were struggling with grief and probate. They have moved in now and are amazing neighbours. Sadly we decided to move as the pain of walking past my neighbour friend's house hurts too much. Another neighbour moved already due to the same reason.

The thing is , the OP says that the sellers posted on Facebook and were making jokes.
So one assumes that there are no tragic circumstances to be taken into account.
