To think this sentence isn't enough?! *TW neglect/cruelty to children*

I can't believe the sentence is this short for such extreme neglect - but equally perhaps this woman needs some serious mental help , this level of abuse seems psychopathic.

Mother who kept three-year-old locked in a drawer jailed for seven years

Child was found severely malnourished, unable to walk or speak and had never seen daylight before her rescue

Well I'm not sure of the details of the case but I'm hopeful that the woman will receive some psychiatric help if she hasn't already.

Judgejudysno1fan · 26/11/2024 21:17

Just read the article and that's absolutely horrendous. It didn't mention where her other children are now, also.
Incredibly sad, imagine if that man hadn't seen the child, she could be there for a very long time. Horrible. Just sad. Kept in a drawer, for 3 years. Hasn't net any if those important milestones. That's preschool age. Bloody hell. Hurts to read that.

PeriPeriMam · 26/11/2024 21:23

What?? And the article mentions in passing that she was out and about with other children. Can't comprehend

Flumoxed · 26/11/2024 21:25

What a shocking story. Utterly tragic. And no, I don't think a 7 year custodial sentence is appropriate. As OP states, psychiatric help is definitely needed. Her other children probably need serious counselling too. They must have known the other child was in the bed drawer. Imagine the guilt and fear those other little ones must have.

mollyfolk · 26/11/2024 21:27

I really wish I hadn't read it,

That poor child will likely be forever disabled and impacted by the zero care shown to her for the first 3 years.

GreatScroller · 26/11/2024 21:56

I felt physically sick reading that and just had to climb in to my little one’s bed to cuddle her whilst she is asleep. That poor little girl is one year younger. I actually cant get my head around it. It’s one of the sickest things I’ve read.

FumingTRex · 26/11/2024 22:06

She was born at the height of covid which is probably part of how this happened. Still hard to believe.

Yes that makes sense as to how the baby got missed by everyone, neighbours or medical services etc.
What I don't understand though is going through all that effort, surely if you don't want a child enough to look after it properly, to not feel any remorse for treating it worse than an animal, you would ask social services to take it? Maybe she thought then she'd lose her other kids.
It's really twisted

The little girl is recovering, say the police.

The other children, who were not neglected, are in care.

Another thread going on this - but highlights the huge problem that Covid stopped social workers/midwives/health visitors checking anyone or anything for way too long, with tragic results.

Covid lockdown is why child removals are the highest they’ve ever been.

Troubled families needed help - social workers were ready and willing - but the professionals were banned from intervening for months then years. Now the children are being removed for good.

Way to go to ‘save the NHS’.

Do we know if that child was actually registered at birth and officially recognised?

I'm baffled the kid could have slipped through the net for 3 years

I ask because there was a story about an 18 year old who has no birth certificate because her mum never registered her after a home birth

'I can't get a job, home or passport despite being born in UK - thanks to mum'

A woman has faced years of bureaucratic limbo thanks to her estranged mum's major mistake after giving birth to her

When I read she had said she's 'not part of the family' my heart broke into a million pieces. Poor baby.

No she was never registered. No evidence anywhere she existed.
Wow that story is bonkers too
