Dd 2 years 2 months keeps getting a high temperature of around 39-40 every night an hour or so after they’ve gone to sleep. I have been giving calpol and that usually deals with it. She’s fine in the day. What could this be? I don’t think it can be teething just for that one hour or so after sleep?

UTI maybe? My DD had this, high temperature in and off, particularly at night. Not really other symptoms but turned out to be a wee infection.

Northernduck91 · 26/11/2024 19:32

Came to say UTI as well!

Urghh11 · 26/11/2024 19:36

Why would it be at night only? She’s weeing as normal, would there be other signs?

Cloudy wee that smells a bit weird. That’s a high temperature though so if it continues I’d visit the GP

What made you take her temp when she went to sleep?

Amba1998 · 26/11/2024 19:40

How often?

BackinBlack24 · 26/11/2024 19:41

A temp Is a sign of infection and if it's not going away they need to go to GP and be checked. if it is a UTI as others have said that's so painful honestly within hours of onset I do be in tears with the pain and discomfort, get GP to do a dip test on her urine, I'd collect some In a sterile bottle (get in pharmacy) and bring with to appointment

Okayornot · 26/11/2024 19:41

How long has this been going on for?

My money is on a combination of a heightened immune response at night to some virus (not uncommon, it's just when she is resting her immune system is really kicking in) together with being toasty and warm in bed.

bakewellbride · 26/11/2024 19:41

Take her to the GP

Holesinsnow · 26/11/2024 19:42

You can buy a dip test to test for a UTI from Amazon, but difficult if she is not toilet trained. It's the same that the GP will use to triage.

@pointlesspoints went to check on her and she was very hot

It’s been every night for last 3 nights. Usually I would be straight to the gp but she’s completely herself in the day, eating and drinking and racing round with no temperature

Nobody on this thread is medic OP, and if they are, they won’t give advice over the internet (or they shouldn’t)- particularly not with a small child. Just take her to the GP tomorrow.

samlovesdilys · 26/11/2024 19:48

Ear infection? My son had this, was ok during the day but lying down made it really hurt. Definitely doctor as sounds like an infection wherever it is.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 26/11/2024 20:31

There are actually scientific reasons people feel worse at night or only have symtpoms at night. This is to do with the cyclical nature of many processes, hormones and the immune system in the body. During the day there are distractions so a child might not notice or feel effected by more mild illnesses.

Fevers can emerge or worsen at night due to the cyclic functioning of the hypothalamus. It becomes more active at night, which can lead to an increase in body temperature when you are sleeping. The circadian rhythm signals immune cells to become more active at night. When these cells pinpoint germs, they fight them off by creating inflammation. The hormone cortisol, which regulates the body's stress responses, is also to blame. Cortisol levels rise in the morning, helping suppress inflammation and reduce symptoms. But lower levels of cortisol at night enable symptoms to flare again.

Scirocco · 26/11/2024 20:36

You need to get her seen by a GP.

Have you taken her temperature through the day or do you just mean she doesn't opl' like she has a temp? Might be worth checking a few times a day if not.
