I'm hearing of more and more suicides lately. It's so awful.
Latest one is a young girl who was a befriender for MIND. Her poor family and friends. I don't know how she did it?

What is going on? I know they say resources are bad but this girl had connections.

It is very sad, unfortunately I think it might be or at least being talked about more as heard of a few lately. The same as the number of missing teenagers seems to be raising too.

EmeraldRoulette · 26/11/2024 17:29

I thought the ONS had figures showing consistent reductions across 59, 60 years...till lockdown. I was hoping it would go back down again though.

apols for lack of link but MN crashes on me all the time.

LushLemonTart · 26/11/2024 17:32

It's so scary having adult dcs. Some that take their own life are so happy on the outside. I regularly check in with mine and have frank conversations.

Just heartbreaking.

So very tragic.

I'm sure you only have good intentions OP, but I'm quite sure if I was her family I would not appreciate the link to this young woman nor your comment where you wonder about how she 'did it'.

cindertoffeeapple · 26/11/2024 17:38

Please can you stop talking about specific methods of suicide - that’s really not safe or ok to do. Have reported your post to MN and asked them to edit that.

bellalou1234 · 26/11/2024 17:38

Coroners can sometimes record misadventure instead of suicide. I feel I'm hearing more and more. Its tragic

Blarn · 26/11/2024 17:41

It's very hard to understand someone taking their own life until you have been in that state of mind yourself.

I think its poorly worded on the OP part, I don't think she is asking the method the young lady used to taker her own life.

Who is asking for specifics?

Two of the OP’s posts mention the specific method of suicide. This goes against all guidance on online safety from Samaritans, Mind etc.

LilyMumsnet · 26/11/2024 17:44

Hi all

We've edited the mention of method out of the opening post. We discussed how to manage these conversations with organisations such as mind, and we don't allow mention of method. Please do bear this in mind - Mumsnet is very visible on search engines.

Msmoonpie · 26/11/2024 17:45

With the total lack of help and support available this is sadly not surprising.

LushLemonTart · 26/11/2024 18:06

Thanks mumsnet HQ.

@Lanzarotelady am sure for some there isn't any hope. But I know for men opening up and talking has helped many. They are known to keep things bottled up.

It was very much a rhetorical question, I think organisations such as Andys man club have been really beneficial to men.

People keep saying we have to do better, but what does better look like, what does good support look like?

LushLemonTart · 26/11/2024 18:20

@Lanzarotelady I share Andy's man club groups on Facebook nearly every Sunday. The local ones had more extra ones this week. Maybe to do with being near Christmas?

Yes, I've noticed this and with missing teenagers as well. Quite possibly the two things are linked. I'm noticing more female suicides as well as teens/20s, this did not used to be considered the most typical demographic to complete suicide successfully. It's a tragedy at any age but for someone with so much of life potentially ahead, it's absolutely beyond heartbreaking.

There is another thread on here about MH and someone makes the point that having poor MH isn't curable, so if that is the case, what help could be provided in a situation like this.

Perhaps not curable but often something that can be moved and managed.

This lack of support means that often neither happens.

RoamingGnome · 26/11/2024 18:57

Overall no, the suicide rate is not rising according to government statistics. There was a fall in deaths over the pandemic then it's gone back to previous levels. Highest in middle aged adults.

Definitely more females.

I sometimes envy sociopaths. Must be nice not to care so much as life is so sad at times.

Lancrelady80 · 26/11/2024 20:43

I have a friend who has struggled with poor mental health for years. They recently attempted to take their life - more than one method at once, in hiding, no "cry for help" about it. They've been failed repeatedly for over twenty years, kept going through it all, and are now completely out of any reserves. It has got so untenable to keep going that they attempted this. Logic would dictate that now of all times all stops would be pulled out to support them, especially with statistics on repeat attempts. T
Yet the crisis team has been worse than useless and it has been decided now that my friend suddenly, miraculously no longer needs support or help from the "next step down" team. They're on their own.

There will be many other stories like this, sadly with tragic aftermaths.

LushLemonTart · 26/11/2024 21:04

@Lancrelady80 that's terrible. It must be so hard and frustrating for you and those close to them.
