Reeves has promised that Labour won't raise taxes again. Will these words come back to haunt Labour ? I think they will !

YANBU of course Labour will raise taxes again

Well it doesn't sound like even Keir believes it so I won't put much stock in it.

caringcarer · 27/11/2024 13:04

What RR says is not necessarily the truth. Starmer refused to confirm it in parliament.

She’s a sort of Walter Mitty figure

randomchap · 27/11/2024 13:24

CCHQ are really taking the electoral loss badly.

waa waa waa, no more funnelling money to our donors, no more taxpayer funded private jets, no more blatant corruption

How about we wait and see how labour improves things or not, and then judge them. They've got 14 years of Tory shit to fix, from the NHS to the economy, to productivity and our relationship with Europe. 6 months in and they do seem to be trying to carry out what they promised

Well, before election she said Growth would solve everything. Then she cut WFA for pensioners almost immediately; gave private sector workers generous pay rises costing many billions; then pummelled private sector with employer NI massive rises, minimum wage increases and the prospect of private sector wages being depressed because employers are in crisis mode; IHT issues for farmers who feed the country (I am not a farmer and have no connection to farming) and she thinks this will stimulate growth or that anyone will believe a word she says about not raising taxes again. Right.

Agree.

The inflation busting pay rise she gave civil servants has cost the treasury an extra £9.4bn! The number of civil servants has also increased. : Civil servants to get 5% pay rise .

This doesn't include all the extra benefits they get that do in some way, have a price tag attached for tax payers, like avoiding some tax and NI by cycling to work Your little extras and big benefits handbook - GOV.UK that kind of thing.

Meanwhile, she stuffs up the private sector, low income pensioners (not just wealthy ones) and farmers.

I think they will absolutely increase taxes in the future, but the spin doctors will put it in such a way that they can say they aren’t.
I don’t think they can means test the state pension, that would be very difficult to administer and would cause a riot for many people including myself who has saved into a personal pension since I was 18 and do have a private pension but have based my pension saving on receiving a state pension at the right time.

But given the shitshow so far nothing would surprise me.

EasternStandard · 27/11/2024 13:41

A bit like 'fully funded, fully costed' pre GE line then

And the hiding around no taxes for working people line

I doubt she knows what she'll do, except that CBI and IoD have both blasted the budget for driving down investment and increasing likelihood of job losses

I honestly don’t know what to believe with this government but I hope at the end of their term there are still some employment opportunities for our kids.

Hate to break bad news but after the changes to employer NICs, private sector businesses are reducing hiring

It won't matter what she said or didn't say. Someone with a username like the OP and some other people who've responded aren't interested in any kind of constructive debate.

Well maybe Rachel should have been clearer about her credentials. It's just humour ffs

She absolutely clueless. Taxing business, causing some of them to go to the wall, or suppress pay rises or lay people off means the tax revenue overall will reduce, causing her to raise taxes.

Economic growth has already stalled, inflation is up and unemployment is edging up. Capital and high earners are in flight out of the country.

This government is decidedly worse than the last one. Who knew that was even possible. After they have hiked taxes again, there will be a general election and they will be booted out. This shower of morons will not get to the end of the 5 year term.

This fashion for referring to politicians by their first names seems to have started with Johnson.

So you think a username like the one you chose is "humour". I beg to differ - and I'd say the same thing to someone who name changed to belittle a Tory politician.

You were so keen to snicker and be edgy and funny - and of course it meant you didn't have to post under a regular username that would be recognised.

So what if I name change its an anonymous forum ! ..and I couldn't give fwo figs whether or not you are amused.

I really posted so I can look back and see how right I am!

Oh I didn't think you would give two figs and I'm really not bothered. You're not the sort of poster I really want to give any further time or headspace to anyway.

Of course they will. They'll blame years of Conservative underfunding and mismanagement.

When the Tories next get back in we'll have years of austerity, citing Labour profilgacy and mismanagement.

Ad infinitum.

Mydahliasareshit · 27/11/2024 20:18

They say 24 hours is a long time in politics.
So a year till the next budget is equivalent to the birth of Christ.
And she probably will have been sacked, so she is probably telling the truth. SHE won't be doing anything.
