Weird Choir song choice?

cavendishcute · 25/11/2024 22:49

The primary school choir teacher is getting the whole junior school to sing Justin Hawkings 'Christmas Time Don't Let The Bells End' at the end of year concert. Is that an odd choice? I'm old enough to remember that song. But for primary kids? I feel like they are being set up. AIBU?

Being set up for what?

Doesn't the original literally have a kids choir in it?

MrsSchnickelfritz · 25/11/2024 23:07

Just googled the lyrics - it's an odd choice if they sing the whole thing and not just the chorus. It seems to be about the end of a relationship - not very festive!

cavendishcute · 25/11/2024 23:12

Justin Hawkins was thrilled to have got the double meanings on the radio and have a children's choir blasting out 'Bell End' and Ring in Peace/Piece' It was a big joke then!

Hilarious but I'm guessing the school will be avoiding the bell end reference.

If it’s a junior school a lot of the older kids won’t be avoiding that reference.

Is the teacher particularly naive?

BeatsAntique · 25/11/2024 23:33

Good grief. 😂

I did go to a middle school (age 11-13) dance recital a few years ago where the school’s (female!) dance teacher had chosen Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar on Me as the song. It was very, VERY uncomfortable but the kids seemed oblivious!

MaryTwerps · 25/11/2024 23:35

Can't believe this!!!

No, I would say he's definitely not naive.

Bell end and ring in piece are in it - full pelt

Wont there be uproar on the mums groups?

Must say though, for all I knew Bells End was rude, I'd never noticed the ring piece joke, so it'll all fly over the kids heads probably.

Alex Drake · 25/11/2024 23:48

Well I'm sure the kids will be oblivious, but surely someone needs to alert the teacher before hand...

CameraCoffeeCrochet · 25/11/2024 23:56

Christmas time,
Don't let the bells end,
Just let them ring in Peace.

It's hardly anything and is the best modern Christmas song out there.

It's a very popular Christmas song. With a bit of innuendo so older kids will probably find it pretty amusing. It's not anything horrible is it, it's a light-hearted jokey festive song. If kids didn't know what a 'bell end' was then they wouldn't really get the joke so no harm done.
I think it's much wittier and theatrical than a lot of the other guff like singing about a 'little donkey on a dusty road, carrying Mary with her 'precious load'..yeah I guess anything could sound a bit cheeky if you wanted it to. 🤣
It's meant to be a laugh and fun at Xmas ultimately isn't it? 😀

LarkinAboot · 26/11/2024 00:15

Better than ours last year that was just the most random collection of entirely unseasonal 60s pop, outdoors too so cold and uncomfortable.

I totally see your point. And if it were high school kids or adults and everyone was in on the joke, absolutely. But here you've got a big group of the youngest children who have no clue. So it's all like haha those little kids singing about bell ends and ring pieces and they have no clue! hahaha! It makes me sick.

It will definitely fly over their heads. That's the whole point of why I think it's weird. Making kids sing a song and laughing they have no clue of the meaning. Of all the songs to sing with kids? Why not get a group of men to sing it? Not as funny is it? Because it's about power.

Does anyone remember the innuendos in Captain Pugwash

Seaman Staines and Master Mates
I loved that kids programme I’m guessing my mum was having a good laugh in the kitchen every time it came on TV.

It's a twisted fairy tale vibe isn't it? Entertaining for adults but I think leave kids out of it.

I’d be concerned the younger kids might be upset or laughed at by older kids who get the sexual innuendos.
