To ask if you would hire....

A 40 year old nanny?
My friend is currently looking but only wants a female aged 25/38 which is her right I guess but personally I would hire anyone under 65 if I felt they were a good match for my family.

Why is 38 fine but 40 isn’t.

Does she understand how birthdays work? If she hires a 38 year old will they be sacked on their 39th birthday? Because that’s mean.

PinkRetro · 25/11/2024 16:52

I know. It doesn't make sense.

I would expect a 40 year to be more than capable. Does your friend think that someone younger will be cheaper by any chance. And perhaps easier to boss about.....?

BlessedAreTheCheesemakerz · 25/11/2024 16:55

I'm a 61 year old nanny. I've been with my current family for 10 years and nannying for 30+. I'm better at my job than I was when I started.

jeaux90 · 25/11/2024 16:56

My nanny was 42 when she started and was with me 10 years until DD was 11.

She was ace.

Igmum · 25/11/2024 16:58

I would have loved a 40 yo nanny when DD was little. I would have imagined she would be far better than young women in their early 20s (so I'm just as prejudiced but in the other direction Grin)

Womblingmerrily · 25/11/2024 17:02

So she wants someone who is at the age that is most likely to get pregnant/ have their own small children?

Doesn't seem like a very good idea to me.

Does she have any reasons she's told you about?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 25/11/2024 17:14

I think I'd be a bit intimidated by someone older than me tbh! Not a great reason, but the process of hiring a nanny is based on gut most of the time anyway.

Losingthetimber · 25/11/2024 17:23

I think some people are worried about asking people to do things, who are their age or older. Suspect this is about her confidence in managing people.

A 40 year 0ld may be more likely to have their own strong views on how to care for a child much more than someone in their twenties. Plus a 40 year old could be more expensive. I would guess the 38 year old cut off point is just random and she wants someone young and malleable.

InSpainTheRain · 25/11/2024 17:30

I don't believe you are able to discriminate based on age. So if someone is doing this they need to change what they are doing.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/11/2024 17:34

I'd rather hire someone that had their own adult/teenage children and was likely to not be having anymore tbh as horrid as that sounds so 45+ for me!

PiggieWig · 25/11/2024 17:34

Is your friend 38 by any chance?

Merryoldgoat · 25/11/2024 17:37

Admittedly my nanny is only pt (after school and holidays) but she’s over 60.

Age wasn’t really something I thought about tbh. She is kind, caring, able to look after the boys and is utterly wonderful.

ginasevern · 25/11/2024 17:42

I'd rather hire a 40 year old than a 25 year old. More life experience, more sensible (presumably) and less likely to get pregnant themselves and leave.
