Be honest… what do you really do if working from home?

Just that really.

I often have a bath at lunchtime. Go to shops. Clean. Last Friday watched a Christmas film in the background in bed while doing some online training. Made a pie.

Sometimes I have to work very late. Sometimes on a weekend. So I think it balances out. Anyone else be honest? Do you ever have almost a day off doing life admin?

I used to get work done if it was urgent, keep an eye on emails……and hoover/clean toilets/get the ironing done as well đŸ˜‚

Scirocco · 25/11/2024 15:16

Working from home means you should be... working (from home).

What you're describing is skiving from home.

Wffhh · 25/11/2024 15:16

@Scirocco i disagree as working in the office was lots of chatter and making tea! and leaving bang on time.

No. I get home stuff done on my breaks but i work harder at home than i do at the office because i haven't got anyone to chat to and don't have to spend time traveling in.

takealettermsjones · 25/11/2024 15:17

...work.

Doesn't anyone notice if you've got nothing to show for your day?

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/11/2024 15:17

I have a similar pattern. I’m more than happy to work until midnight on the occasions the business requires it, and in return I take some flexibility when things are slow and my attention isn’t required. My job is about getting the work done, not being present at a desk. I wouldn’t ever completely abandon my desk and take the whole afternoon off to go out somewhere, because something may crop up / somebody may want to arrange a meeting; but I’ll go to the supermarket, or out for an hour run, or potter around with a glass of wine in the garden in summer.

EmraldSky · 25/11/2024 15:17

I work :-/

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 25/11/2024 15:17

I work harder from home than I do in the office. I do tend to make a healthier lunch though!

@takealettermsjones yes obviously I am working too and get urgent stuff done. I’m always by my laptop

Pretty much the same. Work are cool about it. We can go to the hairdressers or the gym, etc in work time. We just need to get our work done.

IBlameTheDog · 25/11/2024 15:19

I actually put some jobs off until I'm wfh as I know I can concentrate better and get more done.

I might hang some washing out or let the dog out for a wee, but I save and hour and a half commuting and use that time to work so I don't feel guilty about it!

Wish I could wfh full time.

@DanielaDressen which industry? Just curious!

I work from home full time so I do my job. I make use of the fact I have no commute to get house stuff done right before and after work. If it’s quiet I might do some household admin, but sat at my desk so I’m around if I’m needed. But no, I don’t take the piss.

LadyDanburysHat · 25/11/2024 15:20

I work harder than at the office. I will put the odd load of washing on and hang it up to dry. And being at home means I can go for a run at lunchtime, as I can have a shower and get back to my desk.

HappyAsASandboy · 25/11/2024 15:20

I work!

I may have a bath at lunchtime, but that's during my lunchtime. I might also unload some of the the dishwasher while the kettle boils, but I'd make a coffee at work too.

Depending on the type of meeting I am in, I occasionally fold laundry. We have whole-company calls that need to be listened too, but I can fold laundry while I listen! I wouldn't be folding laundry on a call I need to take part in rather than just listen.

Scirocco · 25/11/2024 15:20

Wffhh · 25/11/2024 15:16

Being inefficient in the office doesn't justify being inefficient and taking unauthorised time off to do your own thing on company time just because you're working from home.

minipie · 25/11/2024 15:21

When I wfh it was the kind of job where anyone within the business could call at any time (as well as scheduled Teams meetings). So couldn’t really just bugger off and do home stuff especially not something like making a pie.

I did do laundry & unload dishwasher (jobs that take 5 min) and fit in some exercise, this was manageable because I didn’t have to commute so started earlier & finished later than when WOH.

Your online training - did any go in? Ours always has a quiz at the end to prove you were listening!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 25/11/2024 15:21

I work. I will put some washing on or put clothes into the tumble dryer, maybe put the bins out but if I was away too long from my laptop, people would notice. Also I would not get as much work done.

Dmsandfloatydress · 25/11/2024 15:21

Much more productive at home. Get all the work done in 2 hours and then dp the housework

Prisonpillow · 25/11/2024 15:21

Work the vast majority of the time. I might fold some washing while listening to a meeting if it’s the sort where I struggle to concentrate (eg a broadcast style not directly related to me) because then I actually listen instead of getting distracted by emails.

toomuchfaff · 25/11/2024 15:21

Is this post designed and completed by a BOT to support the upcoming DM article that 95% of mumsnet admitted to skiving when WFH...

like seriously? Are you trying to perpetuate the idea that everyone skives when wfh?

Singleandproud · 25/11/2024 15:21

I work fully Flexi so can do my hours whenever I want between 7am and 7pm obviously around meetings. Before anyone jumps on me I do not claim for the time I am not actively working.

Everytime I boil the kettle I'll do a job: washing on, washing out, dishwasher on, dishwasher empty etc which makes a difference. Quick hoover or dust over lunchtime. Go for a walk at lunch.

If I have a meeting or All staff call where it's just chat with nothing to look at I'll go for a wellbeing walk and listen on my phone, do the ironing, jump on the exercise bike.

Because I don't have a 'Start' time Friday mornings I nip to the shop after the school run get the food for the weekend and put it away. Get the slow cooker on.

Because I do the jobs during the day and my brain works better in the pm I'm happy to work later as all my chores are done. DD is a teen and doesnt need entertaining and likes space when she gets home

mollydol · 25/11/2024 15:23

I used to do it and I found that if I knuckled down I could get the bulk of my work done in a much shorter time than if I was in the office. No distractions or people wanting to talk to you. That left time for a lunchtime walk, making a nice lunch, getting some chores done and occasionally reading my book while keeping an eye on emails. Always used to have daytime tv on in the background too.

As long as you're getting done what needs to be done I don't see the issue. It's flexible working.

kiraric · 25/11/2024 15:27

For me, my work involves lots of meetings and a need to be available and responsive to my team and other colleagues. So I can't just "get the work done" and then clock off.

So I work when I WFH. As a pp said, I will do things like pop the washing on if I am making a cup of tea. I might chop the veg for dinner or put away laundry during a call where I am just listening. And I enjoy having a bit more time because of the lack of commute.

But I don't just skive off the whole day or treat it as being on call

Pfpppl · 25/11/2024 15:28

Similar to others, I might do some jobs around the home, but that's in my lunch break, or while listening to a call, or while making a cuppa etc. I don't do any less than I do in the office. If I'm busy I probably get more done at home as I'm not rushing to leave on time to catch my train.
