to ask the cleaner to empty the vac?

We have a cleaner fortnightly, we have a couple of vacuums but tend to leave the same one or two out for the cleaner.

It is always left full, AIBU to ask her to start emptying it?

If the cleaner has been using it and it gets full then yes they should empty it before they leave.

If you have been using it and it gets full then you should empty it. (I'm assuming you vacuum in between the cleaners cleaning days)

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 25/11/2024 09:46

I’d rather my cleaner spent that time cleaning rather than emptying the vacuum cleaner… what would need to be missed in their clean so they have time to empty the vacuum ( mine takes a bit of time to empty and reset)

Oreyt · 25/11/2024 09:56

Seriously?

niadainud · 25/11/2024 09:57

I don't see why not. It's pretty much part of cleaning - not like you're asking her to repaint the living room or give you a massage.

Dramatic · 25/11/2024 09:58

It's not something I was ever asked to do as a cleaner, but if you want her to do it then I don't suppose she would say no

Yes seriously, if I come home to a clean house, I dont really want to get all dusty emptying the vac

If she is the one who fills it all the way from empty up to the max line, then it would be reasonable to ask her to empty it as part of her job.
But if you and your family get it near-ish to the max , then I think it is your responsibility to empty in, in order to leave her with adequate tools for the job.

A third possibility is that you are one of those people like my husband who feel that the hoover should be emptied after every use, as if it were a dustpan, which is a hard YABU from me.

CrotchetyQuaver · 25/11/2024 10:00

I think that's fair enough, I always empty my shark after using it and get quite irritated when I come to use it again and mr nobody's used it inbetween and left it full.

Yes, that would be awful.

We tend to use the cordless vac and have a robot down stairs that only needs emptying once per month. The cleaners are the only people that really use the upright corded vacs.

I don't think it's unreasonable - makes sense to me! I always empty the vac after hoovering but before finishing my cleaning, otherwise it doesn't feel clean if I empty it at the end? 😂

This is interesting as we pay for the job rather than per hour (this was their choice when they first quoted). Some times they are in and out and other times takes longer.

The cleaners we have had have always emptied the vacuum cleaner

But to be fair we don't generally hoover in between the cleaner's visits - unless there is a specific reason to

Haha, definitely not like your husband, its done when its a must do (much like the rest of the cleaning hence hiring a cleaner).

My cleaner empties ours after every visit, always has done. To me it's just like her rinsing out the cleaning cloths and putting the mop out to dry - all part of the end of her clean, and what I also do on the weeks she doesn't come.

BobbyBiscuits · 25/11/2024 10:25

Yes of course they need to empty it. They sound pretty useless not to have done so already? You'd think it's common sense. But just politely show them how to empty each hoover and just ask them to do it once it's full.
If you were using it prior to the cleaner then out of courtesy I'd probably empty it myself unless it was only half full. But I'd still show them how and ask that they do it when required.

Yoyokitten · 25/11/2024 10:41

Am I the only one who finds the thought of leaving a vac full of dirt a bit gross ?
I always empty after every use but it's a cordless and takes about 5 seconds max.
Maybe I was brought up that way as we grew up with animals..I think my Mum was horrified thinking there may be flea eggs in the bag 😱😹

mondaytosunday · 25/11/2024 11:32

My cleaners (consecutive, I don't have a team!) have always emptied the vacuum as needed.

Tragic even

Seems to be a 50/50 split of opinions.

Spondoolies · 25/11/2024 11:55

Can’t you leave it full for them to empty on the next occasion. I only tend to empty mine before I start rather than after
