AIBU to wish people would stop writing professional emails with Chat GPT?

One of my managers writes absolutely everything with Chat GPT and as a result, all her emails are oddly formal and often get people's backs up. The tone is all wrong. I don't think she realises how badly she is coming across - and most of the team don't realise that the reason her communication is so lacking warmth and human touch is because she's telling AI what she wants to say.

She even once sent an email to me to let me know that "Marie Jones (your team leader) will advise you on this matter separately." Oh, THAT Marie Jones?! My team leader?! The one who I share an office with?! Thank God you included her surname and clarified her role or I would not have had a clue which Marie (the only one who works with us) you were talking about.

I've just had a general class update from my child's teacher that has been written with Chat GPT - I guess it saves time and I don't really blame him, but I do find it cringy. Once you spot it, it's so obvious. I would be embarrassed to send it.

I should add that I'm not always entirely sure why it's obviously written by AI. The adjectives are a bit off I think. And the sentence structure is recognisably formulaic and always rather longer than a human tends to write.

If you do this at work, you should know that some of the recipients know exactly what you're doing, and it doesn't look great.

ChatGP has been useful in condensing down writing for a correct word count. And I find Grammarly useful too.

As someone who cuts down word counts and fixes grammar for a living, I would warn against relying on AI to do this. Editing text is a sensitive job. It's very easy to screw up and mangle the original meaning, or ruin the flow ... or scrap a line that, while not conveying much information, is essential for getting across the import of information already conveyed.

Absolutely and totally this. Solidarity, sister 🤣.

LeonoraCazalet · 25/11/2024 07:39

You are talking about writing with AI. But, I find it amazing when learning a second language. I am learning Italian and just look words and phrases up which help me construct sentences which I would not otherwise be able to construct. I would be spending ages looking words up in a dictionary.

@Bjorkdidit it absolutely does. Say I'm writing a newspaper report about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. It would take me ages to research, structure and then write it. Chat gpt does it in seconds and yes I make edits but I find it's pretty good. I don't need to to be 100% accurate as I'm teaching 9 year olds writing skills mostly. So I guess that helps. I don't find it oddly worded but I can change bits I don't like.

I can’t believe I just read this.

Gsgsyska · 25/11/2024 07:43

I love AI. I have an SPLD and believe my natural writing style is rather clunky. I’m self-employed and write reports for a living. Since I’ve started using AI to rewrite my sentences my work has increased four fold.

EmmaEmEmz · 25/11/2024 07:45

Just a FYI...

I lost a job because I was accused of using Chat GPT. I'm a writer so would never use it because it's the biggest cause of job losses in my field.

I've literally never even logged onto the site but my writing was flagged as using it. I have adhd...

I understand that you might have some reservations about ChatGPT, and I appreciate your feedback! While it's true that AI has its limitations, it’s also designed to continuously improve. ChatGPT can handle a wide range of tasks, from answering questions and explaining complex topics to assisting with creative writing and brainstorming ideas. However, it might not always be perfect in terms of nuance or context, as it learns from patterns in data rather than human experience.
If you have specific concerns or examples where it didn't meet your expectations, feel free to share! I’d love to help address them and clarify how it works. AI like ChatGPT is constantly evolving, and feedback like yours is important for making it better.

😂😂😂

AlpacaMittens · 25/11/2024 07:47

One million percent agree. It's unfortunately becoming more prevalent. People seem to think their emails sound professional and they're saving time so it's a win win, when in reality their emails read as if they were written by C3PO. It's cringey.

I’m learning Italian too, & I’d be wary of constructing sentences in it with AI because I’d be less able to judge how correct / natural they were.

Bjorkdidit · 25/11/2024 05:55

But it produces absolute garbage that is oddly worded plus you obviously need to check it for accuracy. Does it really save time compared with writing it yourself?

Plus in a work environment its likely breaching confidentiality as you're giving that information to ChatGPT.

People use it to write posts on here and it's really easy to spot. There was one a few days ago where the OP came back to ask why they'd not got many useful replies and we all said it was because we didn't want to have a conversation with AI.

Do you mind me asking which thread that was? People here are saying that it is very obvious to spot but I don't think I've ever seen anything produced by AI.

Perhaps I'm in an environment where it isn't used for writing documents?

faw2009 · 25/11/2024 07:49

Great. Teachers are using it to teach our kids. Kids are using it to write their homework, banks are using it to write their reports (on things we might want to invest in), university students are using it to write their essays, fictious reading lists, making legal cases up in court cases...

If all these AI bots learn from what's out there, and more and more rubbish is generated by AI then they are just learning and producing more generic rubbish.

In today's fast paced world..

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/11/2024 07:54

I have adhd and often struggle to get started on tasks. I find that chat gpt can help me to get past this by providing a ready made framework that I can then edit. Often, I end up editing it beyond recognition, so the end product is very much my own work, but it helps me to get past that initial blank page stage by giving me a useful starting point.

Using it without editing is just lazy and generally very easy to spot.

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/11/2024 07:55

I can't understand how it doesn't take just as long to feed ChatGPT what you want to say fora short email as it does to just write the email in the first place.

We have been known to use it as a tool at work in terms of content for our website blog, but what it produces is then thoroughly edited and checked for accuracy by a human. We're not reliant on SEO for our website, if we were then I wouldn't be using AI on it at all.

It’s a very useful tool for people who are time poor, or not confident writers. You might find it handy for elements of your own job, why but try it!
Your boss could probably use it better, eg ask it to use a warmer tone for the people who need it (including you by the sound of it), and a factual tone for people who just want the info. However in itself it’s not a bad thing to use.
My role involves writing short form text descriptions and I utilise it as a tool occasionally, when I am having writers block - either to create the skeleton text that I then make my own by adding suitable adjectives, or to do the descriptive bit which I can then tweak and add the facts to. We don’t need to worry about it taking our jobs just yet, it sounds very Americanised, stiff and uses some archaic words and phrases - but there’s no reason we can’t use to to help us.

Edited

Well you would say that wouldn't you? Wink

Itisjustmyopinion · 25/11/2024 07:58

In my work it is being used but also questions are being raised on how to consider it’s use for doing end of year ratings. For example you have colleague 1 who has pulled a paper together using their own research skills and experience vs colleague 2 who put something into chat gpt who then essentially did the paper for them. How should that be reflected in ratings and how would the manager know?

I can see where it has uses but also wondering how much actual experience will be valued in the future when all you need to do is have someone with limited knowledge and experience coming to the same output by using a search engine

ThatsNotMyTeen · 25/11/2024 07:59

You can spot chat gpt letters a mile off, they look awful

Agree. I have many students that use AI. The ones that use fake references or submit a 1000-word piece of written work without a single reference are easy. These are reported to our university's disciplinary committee. But an essay that is just written in a generic way and lacks specific examples, but does include (real) references? Students have been writing assignments like that for much longer than ChatGPT has been around. The difference is that usually their writing style also used to be quite poor, whereas I find ChatGPT produces output that is often poor in content but quite well-structured.

So still not going to get a good mark then.

You don't have to believe the BBC. Scientific journals, banks, just about everyone acknowledges AI has a problem.
My DD works as a climate change researcher and it infuriates her that AI is used so trivially and unnecessarily.

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/11/2024 08:01

@LeonoraCazalet I agree with @EmpressaurusKitty. My friend is a native speaking Italian that teaches Italian to English speaking secondary school kids. She has been handed some absolute garbage nonsensical pieces of work that have come from AI.

Namechangetheyarewatching · 25/11/2024 08:01

This makes me sad, as someone with dyslexia and who doesn't really understand grammar and tends to write as I speak.

Chatgbt was a life saver for me, so I would write an email and it would just make it sound a bit better and less round the wrong way. 😵‍💫
