To take my meal allowance home?

I have a job where I get one of the products we sell as a meal allowance for my break. It's portable food, so think sandwiches/wraps etc rather than stuff from a canteen.

The food isn't bad but it's quite calorific/unhealthy and I'm desperately trying to lose weight. I'm also vegetarian so the range I can have is quite limited and a bit repetitive and boring after a while.

Wibu and really cheeky to take my meal allowance home and bring in my own lunch? Dp works a job where he travels a lot and needs 'portable' food so it seems a shame that I would have to essentially waste my meal allowance when he could make use of it instead. Wouldn't be every day, just occasionally.

My theory is that if I'm allowed to eat X item, does it matter if I have it at work or at home? Would I get into trouble for this?

Definitely ask. I know someone who was dismissed for doing pretty much exactly this (just a donut which they were entitled to at work but taking it off the premises was gross misconduct). Will hopefully be fine. But safer to check.

Ask if you can take it home but say it’s for you not your DH.

This is what is do. I'd say to my manager that I like to have a light meal while I'm working so would it be ok if I take it home to eat later.

Oh I definitely wouldn't say that it's for Dp! To be fair we only get 2x10 minute breaks and I often feel like that's too short a time to eat anyway, you have to wolf it down so fast to actually finish anything so to take some home would be well within normal limits.

I do see how it could be considered unlawful though, they don't have a problem with us taking home unsold/out of best before stuff at the end of the day but that seems very different tax-wise.

@tachetastic yeah that seems totally reasonable, to stop people taking the piss. Although in our case we are only allowed one time off the shop floor so it would be very noticeable if we were carting out bagfuls of stuff 😂

I'd definitely ask. You don't want to be sacked for pasty smuggling!

You get 2 x 10m minute breaks? How long are your shifts and what country are you in?

DragonGypsyDoris · 25/11/2024 07:44

How would we know? Just ask at work.

@Gwenhwyfar I didn't know luncheon vouchers still existed. Is it on contactless card these days?

Yes. I'm not in the Uk though.
