Is kidney tumour bad?

BaklavaRocks · 24/11/2024 19:18

Was told in a text message from doc following US for something else, that I have a kidney tumour. Text said likely to be benign, but have been referred to kidney specialist at hospital.

Anyone know anything about benign kidney tumours? Do they get worse? What if it's not benign? What causes th m?

Been knocked a bit for six by this!

Thanks

A text message???!!! 😲

I'm sorry op, I don't have anything to advise but I sincerely hope it's nothing ❤️

Can't believe that doctor, that's disgusting xx

Hi I'm no expert but thought I'd share an experience. My friend had one removed recently. It was thought to be benign but they couldn't say for definite unless they took it out. Doc offered her a choice -leave it and it might never cause any issue but it might grow and if it suddenly ruptured it would be an emergency where other organs might be affected, internal bleeding, septic shock etc. Or have it removed and biopsied. She opted for removal as she didn't want to have 6 monthly scans forever to monitor. Op went well, biopsy showed benign and she'd recovered within about 6 weeks. Best of luck with yours

Thanks. Yeah I just feel like I've got loads of questions but the text was from my GP via NHS no reply! Bit stressful.. and feel really discombobulated...

Thank you
That sounds quite encouraging. I'm scared of anaesthetic but maybe an op, if offered, would get rid of it and I could feel back to normal. I'm so worried!

I've been there.
Any cancer is scary but I think kidney cancer can be totally fine.
Mine was detected incidentally as a result of investigations (US) for other issues. As far as I can see this early detection is likely to result in a good outcome. Sadly if you start to detect 'normal' symptoms, pissing blood etc, that is less likely to be the case.
Not sure they can tell if a tumour is likely to be benign before removing it, my experience is somewhat the opposite. Likely to be cancerous pending removal and histology. It was renal cell carcinoma. They generally adivse against biopsy and in favour of getting it out.
It's considered to be major surgery but mine was laparoscopic/robotic and was totally bearable.
Four years on now with follow-up scans and one year to go before discharge.
Even if you are not as lucky as me, there are lots of treatment pathways to stop it coming back. I was judged to not need any further treatment.
Hope it goes as well for you.

My dad had a kidney tumour, diagnosed after he started peeing blood. He ended up having the kidney removed, and he's still alive and kicking ~20 years later. He does have to go for regular checks of his bladder and they occasionally find a new tiny tumour developing there, but they get Lasered off. Hope this doesn't scare you, just wanted to give you the full picture that he is still fine decades later but with monitoring. 💐

Edit to add that they check the bladder because it was actually a type of bladder cancer that had moved into his kidney apparently.

Thank you! Lasered off sounds good! Never heard of that!

An oncocytoma is a usually benign kidney tumour which only requires monitoring , not usually surgery.
A renal cell kidney cancer is serious and requires treatment .
Sorry, must be a worrying time. Hope it's ok

@BaklavaRocks was going through similar recently. On US kidney mass with solids and vascularity but it was just scar tissue on CT scan . Sending positive vibes. Was horrible 3 weeks wait .please keep updating

A text? From your GP?

Lifestooshort71 · 29/11/2024 20:38

My OH was diagnosed with renal cancer during scan for diverticulitis. First we knew was when a letter arrived with an appt at the oncology dept at local hospital! Anyway had entire kidney removed via a robot and was home 3 days later and back at work 2 weeks later. No further treatment apart from an annual scan for 5 years. Fingers crossed your is as straight forward.
