Could this be an allergy? [Content warning: contains pic of contents of nappy]

Hello,

FTM to a FF baby. Breastfeeding isn't an option however he did manage to have colostrum. We have been on formula since bringing him home on the ready made aptamil bottles. Recently we tried introducing powdered formula however he seems to be in real discomfort while feeding including arching his back, grunting (looking in pain), a fair volume of spit up. We have returned to ready made but he stills looks in pain while passing gas. He does frequently have hiccups, coughing too. We do keep him upright for 30 minutes if not longer.

In the most recent feed he has spit up a fair volume and had string like mucus in his poo. He had been cleared for a tongue tie but has a lip tie. I'm not sure if I am confident that he doesn't have a tongue tie too as he makes clicking noises while using the dummy.

Any advice would be welcome.

You could have put a warning in your thread title that you'd attached a picture of a shit!

Ask your health visitor.

HV are rubbish on allergies. Join the cmpa facebook group.

My children had cmpa and their symptoms were more signifigant than that.

If that is all the milk spit up then it isn't very much. Babies can bring up some milk after a feed as the value at the top of the stomach isn't that mature in young babies. It isn't unusual for young babies to bring up some milk, try feeding small bottles more often, this may help.

Trust me both my baby and a friends had reflux and they brought up whole feeds, we had to use towels not muslins and I'd needed a change of cloths with and she would bring up so much milk it would soak through my top and bra. And they say babies tummies are small.

Surely it depends on the health visitor!

One of mine pushed for tests that my GP didn't want to bother with, and it turned out HV was right.

It's usually better to get medical advice from a professional, at least in the first instance, than from Facebook or Mumsnet.

Your photos don’t look abnormal to me. My DD didn’t get on with aptamil. She had terrible wind and her poo was green! We switched to hipp organic and she was much better, still windy but not as bad. I just had a windy baby. But as others say ask HV if concerned.

Have you tried different teats and different feeding positions? He could be struggling to feed efficiently from the teats you are using.

CMPI babies can redecorate your room when they upchuck. Mine missed their own clothes entirely, but soaked whoever was holding them - and sometimes the next person along!

Very true. Mine wasn’t great.

This brings back awful memories of having to take out spare clothes for me and my 3 year old due to vomitting baby 2.

Very true. Mine wasn’t great.

Mine also wasn't great. When DD1 didn't gain weight (breastfeeding) they told me to 'try harder', and another then told us to give formula, which then caused a much more severe cmpa reaction and she went unconscious and ended up in hospital. Paediatrician took one look at her poo nd diagnosed her, but prior to that we had had 5 different HV's and 2 GP examine her and none picked it up. Even after diagnosis I had HV's tell me to stop the specialist cmpa formula as it was like feeding her McDonald's and made me a rubbish mum. After 3 weeks of no sleep that sent me into PND.

OP,, there is no formal test for cmpa, diagnosis was made on symptoms alone.
