To think Shirley Bassey has proven us all fools

Remember the sketch where her high heel got stuck on a stair and Eric Morcombe put his black boot on her foot instead. How we laughed. My daughter goes clubbing in similarly spangly dresses and boots most weekends and so do her friends. Nobody’s laughing now. Shirley was evidently ahead of her time. What do you wear now that’s super stylish but we’d have laughed like drains about back in the day? ‘Style’ is such a random notion isn’t it?

She probably doesnt wear them 4 sizes too big, unlaced and more akin for mining

But yes, style comes around and goes around

She is an absolute legend though and that clip one of the funniest things ever, only trumped by Andrew Preview.

I was wearing DMs and little slip dresses to go to clubs and gigs in the mid nineties. Not a new trend.

By the late nineties it was all chunky trainers, low slung combats and corset tops.

In the mid 2000s it was jeans or fifties style full skirts with flat pointed slip ons or sparkly converse/Rocket dog shoes.

Now I wear metallic Supergas or brogues.

I've never worn high heels to go out.

To be fair, I don't think I've ever suffered foot pain like it since breaking in new DM boots during the 90s. Still suffered for fashion.

Maybe you don't but many of us do. That was classic comedy.

Google it. It’s worth it.

DMs are a fashion that has returned, was common in the 1980s I think. When they were made in the UK, and worn by the then Pope apparently.

Nothing to do with Dame Shirley Bassey with Morecambe and Wise.

Nonewsisthebestnews · 24/11/2024 11:41

DMs and tea dresses were all the rage in the 90s, Six from blossom was a style icon. I'm making a comment based on other comments because I don't understand the OP.

BuntyVisitsTheMoon · 24/11/2024 12:03

Of course you understand the OP, it is a benign and lighthearted post, so prone to getting the daytime gin drinkers a bit touchy methinks Grin

I don't know the scene but can easily google it.

ThoughtfulSchooldays · 24/11/2024 12:07

Not clothing, but I'm amazed big bums came into fashion! I used to joke about it, "one day it'll be my time, big bums will be in!" but never thought it would actually happen.

😮

LindorDoubleChoc · 24/11/2024 12:23

Such a funny sketch! Especially when they make the stage revolve using that crank handle Grin. My kids (23 and 21) are familiar with it because we've forced them to watch various Eric & Ernie sketches over the years!

It's not just the youngsters with those boots OP. My bff has a pair and she's 62, she probably wouldn't wear them with sequins though.

mitogoshigg · 24/11/2024 12:24

@ThoughtfulSchooldays

I know, that's weird in my opinion. I have a substantial one, perhaps I can sell my excess Grin

Fashion is weird though I had no idea about sparkly dresses being in as my dd(23) is very much into t dresses and doc martens, she's a mini me as I'm still stuck in the 90's style wise! (I do have a lovely picture of us at a pub last summerSmile)

Julie168 · 24/11/2024 12:37

Everyone wore DM's everywhere in the 90's when I was at uni - well apart from me because I thought they were ugly. They were cheap though, which they're not now.
Shirley Bassey is absolutely amazing in the clip😍 but I've never found Morecombe and Wise at all funny.
