Daughter on OE and war

Our family moved to NZ from the UK in 2007 when our children were 8 & 6. Our daughter *25 yrs old) has just gone on her OE with her partner and have ended up in London and are looking for jobs and a flat. I am generally very pragmatic and definitely not a worrier, but for some reason I have recently been having nightmares about WW3 starting and my daughter being caught in the thick of it. I literally cannot stop thinking what would happen if war broke out and she was stuck over there but don't want to worry her by suggesting she comes back to NZ where it is safe. My husband is v dismissive of my fears and says the media are blowing it out of proportion which isn't very helpful! Should I let her know the potential danger she is in or is it not a real concern over there?

Oh dear I’ve got enough going on I don’t have the energy to worry about ww3. When I went to NZ I spent the whole time worrying about earthquakes and tsunamis. That seems a more likely risk. Maybe your daughter is safer here!

@Doodlybug
I get it, the media is pumping us full of fear at the moment. I live in the UK and work in London and to be honest feel very safe when I am there.
I had a mini worry the other day when UK weapons were being fired into Russia and the shit media were scaremongering, but honestly no, the risk for being hit by a car on my walk to the station is still much higher than nuclear war.
Honestly I know it's easy to say, but try not to let these thoughts intrude. I feel perfectly safe and i am a natural worrier. I hope she is having a fabulous time.

I know. Why talk in riddles😂

Not talking in riddles. Standard NZ term, obviously not used over here but anyone living in NZ knows it and uses it. Lots of NZ kids go overseas for a year or more to experience the wider world, because NZ is so tiny and we're quite interested in other countries. I started my OE in 2006 and I'm still here. Grin

OP: as others have said, try not to worry. WW3 is not imminent, Putin is posturing. If Russia can't win in Ukraine in nearly 3 years they're not about to take on the rest of Europe.

Crabwoman · 24/11/2024 08:59

Honestly, no one I know has expressed it as a real concern or even discussed the possibility of WW3 happening.

The news is reported, obviously, but no fear mongering, Keir has not addressed the nation, no warnings of imminent war. It takes up a small % of the news. The headlines for the past few days have mostly been about the weather!

It is business as usual here.

DreamW3aver · 24/11/2024 09:03

I'm sure my life is pretty normal and no one I come across is the slightest bit concerned, it's not a topic of conversation anywhere except in the news ime. People are probably more worried about being poisoned by fake alcohol if they go travelling or the current bad weather

It pissed me off to 😂

Prescottdanni123 · 24/11/2024 09:16

If WW3 does break out, nowhere in the world will be safe OP.

For the record, no I don't think there will be a third world war. Not yet anyway.

@RawBloomers jeez, seriously? Having concerns about my daughter's wellbeing while travelling overseas does not equate to me having mental health issues. I am simply enquiring whether there are concerns over there about the possibility of WW3. Here in NZ it is clearly being blown out of proportionate I was wanting to get some "on the ground" feedback from one caring mother to the majority of other caring mothers out there.

Worrying about WW3 to the extent you’re having nightmares and considering trying to pass that anxiety onto your DD while she’s of doing a very normal thing?

Yes, seriously.

I am not in London but in The UK.
I am really not worried OP and I do appreciate how worrying it is for Mums to have our DC a long way away no matter how old they are when certain sections of the media are doom mongering.
It will be fine OP

Because of the ANZUUS treaty and the early warning system, NZ and Australia are no safer than Europe if there were to be a nuclear war. There are bits of Australia which would be taken out before Europe because of this. NZ will not be reliably safe.

So I don't think it matters, and anyway, if the world is going to end, at least your DD will have had some experience of the world.
