New home (old house) dry throat

No idea where to post this .. last night was our first night in our new home. The house is 250 years old.
It has been empty for 18 months.

The old carpet is still here until it can be changed. Woke up this morning to my daughter crying. She was saying it's her nose and throat and getting really upset. My throat is also really dry and sore.

Are there any reasons for this?
I'm having the boiler services Friday. Don't know if it's the carpets. I just want to check it's nothing I should be worried about.

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?

Mumistiredzzzz · 24/11/2024 07:10

I would bet money on the problem being old musty damp carpets.

I don't know if there is. I thought they give them out when they service the fire and boiler so that's booked for Friday. I was going to order some as I think my ex took the ones from the last house

I want to get the carpet changed asap but people keep telling me to wait until I've painted the house first

Can you lift the carpets and remove them? Not ideal and you might need rugs and slippers etc but my experience is it's always old dirty carpets that cause me scratchy sore throats when we have moves

I wouldn't wait until Friday to get a carbon monoxide detector. You can get one delivered today if you have Amazon prime. You need to have one anyway and I doubt if they'll give one to you when the boiler is serviced.

If you don't have the money to replace carpets yet, you could try hiring a carpet cleaner.

I'd concentrate on giving the whole house a really good clean. Old houses do tend to be dusty.

This might not be relevant where you are, but the same has happened here this morning. I think it's just because it's gone from 2° to 16° overnight and our thermostat hasn't been adjusted so we've all got a dry throat!

Just an idea, might not be the case where you are.

I've just ordered one to come tomorrow.

It does need a proper clean. My mum came to 'clean' it a couple of days ago but it turns out she didn't clean anything at all which I only discovered late last night when I arrived. I'm going to do it today as much as possible and sort out flooring. The carpet is really old and dirty

I would just rip the carpets up, give it all a good clean and then get some rugs. Had to do that in a new (old) house with a flea infestation once.

Is there any mould anywhere?

Mould in the loft so I've had someone come in to ventilate it and removed the boards with mould and had insulation put in the loft floor as there wasn't any

I'm having the same problem this week. I live in an old house (not quite that old) but it's poorly insulated. It's definitely to do with the weather.
