First family holiday outside of UK-where to go?

Looking for cheap and cheerful for a family of 4 who are neurodiverse vegetarians with restricted diets 😰

My dc have never been abroad and I haven't been since before dc. I've been to Oslo, Kos, Mallorca, Benidorm (when very small), Ibiza (before it got partified), and Kos. I've done New York and Paris for a few days. Hardly well travelled.

Last time I went to Mallorca it was £250 for a week each. Those were the days!

I'm going to be Captain Obvious by going off your username and saying Legoland in Denmark?

Billund airport is less than 2km away from the site and depending on where you are in the UK the flights aren't too expensive or you could go overland if you enjoy trains and ferries? Here's the tourist information website. They market themselves as the capital of children:

It's not exactly a hot beach and swimming pool type destination but I'm trying to think what you would like.

Look,at Tui Blue Hotels, they cater for food allergies.

What do you enjoy doing on holiday? Are you into hiking? Theme parks? Swimming? Sightseeing? Do you want to be near the sea? Are you fussy about weather? How old are the kids? Are you ok with flying or would you prefer to drive? This will help us suggest places.

If you want a sun holiday then I'd probably suggest Spain with a buffet, at least half board. So Salou, Benalmadena or Fuengirola, or Menorca/Mallorca.

Depends what you want though. We had a great time at Port Aventura last May half term. But it's full on!

TUI Blue hotels. Just been to a RIU hotel and could barely eat for sustenance never mind taste. Vegan, neurodiverse, and low fodmap diet due to gastro issues

Been to tui blue in egypt and that was the best inclusive resort I have been to so far. I have heard great things about resorts in mexico too (not tui blue)

If you are going to a city, rome is great for food too and european countries tend to have more grips with special/limitted diets

YellowHeaven · 23/11/2024 23:33

The first thing you need to do is consider what type of holiday would best suit your family. Would a large all inclusive hotel be too overwhelming? If there are food issues would self catering be simpler? Can you and your children tolerate heat? Would they cope ok with the travel, change of routine, ie is it honestly going to be enjoyable for them and you to go abroad?

bananamum13 · 24/11/2024 03:02

May not be helpful but if you were to go to a local hotel in Europe, vegetarian & fussy options will probably be minimal. So maybe a Holiday Village kind of resort which offers a 'broad' range of food options wherever you go.

I'm so sorry, I just realised I never came back to the thread! I didn't mean to be rude.
I'm glad I posted because you've all got me thinking about things I hadn't considered.
I'm going to look into things more and probably visit a local travel agents to see what they come up with.
As a single parent it seems a big thing to take my dc on a plane to another country. Silly perhaps, but it seems daunting. We usually travel everywhere by train and think nothing of it but I love flying and haven't flown since 2007.

What do you like to do? How warm do you want it? We went to the Netherlands last year - Duinrell, which is a theme park/campsite - and we loved it. Travel is easy - you could drive, get the train/ferry or fly, and food was straightforward - plus a lot of self-catering. Very accessible as everyone speaks English.
