We don’t get why it is more expensive that others reasonably close by? We are used to Scottish private schools and they are much less. Unfortunately moving due to work and this is the local one which has been recommend after a lot of research. Seems extortionate for what it is (aside from the building which is obviously nice but not what you are paying for!!). Any private school parents in England who know what to look for?

It’s a very old, established school, goes back to the nineteenth century at least.

PleaseDontBeMean · 23/11/2024 16:14

It's cheaper than some comparable schools like Oundle...

indeekaa · 23/11/2024 16:14

@whereilived does that mean it’s good though? I guess well established could mean that?

I really wanted dc to go to Fettes College and feel gutted about it

It's not excessively expensive for an established school. What other local options are there?

whereilived · 23/11/2024 16:17

Honestly, I don’t know, it’s a beautiful school but I couldn’t tell you about the quality of teaching or anything like that. (Other than they didn’t offer me a job some fifteen years ago!)

I just wanted fettes college and now feel a bit stuck with what’s on offer in England

There are some very good state schools in England. Might be worth considering. Private schools range in price, but the fees for Denstone are comparable to similar schools. There will be cheaper options around, but they may have less facilities. Boarding schools in England tend to be more expensive for day pupils, than private day schools.

Scotland also has a very very unique way of viewing schooling. The 'where did you go to school? .. fettes, Watson's??? etc..' conversation doesn't really happen in England where quite frankly no-one gives a damn where you went to school!

The fees look fairly normal for a private school?

indeekaa · 23/11/2024 16:24

I was looking at Lichfield cathedral school and Newcastle under Lyme and they are much cheaper, not sure why

I know a couple of kids who went/go there & one of the teachers.

the fees seem in line with other schools in the area such as Abbotsholme. They are more than schools further afield such as Nuls (where my kids started off) but that’s located in a very different area & doesn’t reslllt have all the extras.

Newcastle under Lyme School (Nuls) has always been a cheaper private school. Class sizes are smaller than state schools but larger than other private schools. They have better facilities than most state schools but nothing like what some of the other schools have. There are a lot of families who send their kids there because the local state school they were given was so bad (like us although it was a disaster for Ds - long story)
