Hair falling out, help!

ItsAllAboutTheBass7 · 23/11/2024 14:11

I've noticed over the last year or so that lots of my hair is coming out in my hands when washed.
I've started recently using Plantur 39 and a tangle teaser, but I'm losing so much, I'm scared I'll end up bald at this rate 😟! Even DH was shocked when I showed him my hand full of hair.
I'm 49, so it may be an age thing?
Has anyone else experienced this. I'd be grateful of any recommendations of products you found helped if so. 🙏🙏

OP the best thing to do is go to your GP. They can run tests to find out if it’s something like thyroid or iron.

You need to see your GP to get checked for deficiencies.

I’m the same age and perimenopausal, it’s been happening to me for the past 2 years. I started taking a daily vitamin D spray and well woman’s supplement and my hair is not coming out in such volume anymore. Sadly though my hair has got thinner and my scalp is more noticeable than it was. Losing your hormones is so depressing and you don’t realise until around this time as a woman, how much our bodies need them for literally everything.

Absolutely this

I had a phase like this where I had handfuls of hair after every shower or even just brushing or running fingers through my hair, it lasted a good couple of years.
I never did find out what caused it but it eventually stopped and grew thicker again so there is hope.

BookGoblin · 23/11/2024 15:45

Tangle teasers are really rough on hair, I'd switch to a soft brush.

And see your GP.

This has happened to me on the off occasion, I think it's hormones for me.

Have you had covid in the last 6 months? After a bad bout of hair loss I had a Google and it said covid can be a cause! I started taking biotin and nothing else...my hairs back to normal now after a year x

TwilightSkies · 23/11/2024 15:48

Do you dye your hair? Do you ever oil your scalp or do they other deep treatments?
Do you eat plenty of protein and iron?

ReadWithScepticism · 23/11/2024 15:50

There are so many different possible causes, some of which may well right themselves over time, others of which might need treatment. Def worth getting a GP appointment.
Don't worry too much about how you are brushing and what shampoo you use. If a hair's gonna fall it will fall, regardless of how you care for it.

Check your hba1c for prediabetes/diabetes.

Theraffarian · 23/11/2024 15:56

Also some people have this reaction to HRT in case you are on medication.

5128gap · 23/11/2024 15:56

I lost a lot of hair in perimenopause. Now post menopause with an excellent diet, vit D and B and HRT, its thick and shiny (and oddly had stopped growing through grey!) and hardly sheds at all. I think the HRT was the real game changer.

Shedding hair is very normal after a virus or any period of illness. It should resolve itself within a few months on its own.

OP, have you talked to your hairdresser about it? I've had a couple of periods of shedding after illness and both times my hairdresser was very reassuring. She could see the tiny new hairs growing in and knew it wasn't a long term problem.

She also provided advice to pass on to a friend of mine who did have very, very fine hair. She knew what had worked and what hadn't for her clients with the same problem.

Ultimately, if you are losing hair, rather than going through a 'shedding phase' don't spend months trying different expensive treatments. Put that money into a consultation with a trichologist sooner rather than later.

DazedAndConfused321 · 23/11/2024 16:18

Speak to your doctor. They'll check a general panel of thyroid and vitamin levels.

Have you gone through menopause?

Pinkpurpletulips · 23/11/2024 16:35

I'd definitely check with the doctor rather than self medicating with vitamins etc. I do know that when I had low iron I lost some hair which grew back when the medical condition that caused the low iron was resolved. I do shed quite a bit but I have lots of hair so it's just normal turnover for me. Is your hair looking thinner? Is your hair breaking or shedding?

I don't think dyeing is the problem unless you are doing something like double process bleaching where you might get breakage. I've had my hair dyed for 40 years and it is still thick. I do let it dry naturally and treat it gently.

TreeCake · 23/11/2024 16:45

Yes I had very similar. I had bloods done and had quite a few deficiencies ( vitamin D, ferritin and folate). Not sure which one caused the hair loss but it was 100% improved after a few months of supplements.

Yes, and don't waste money on any product at all that claims to fix this, or on seeing trichologists, who have no significant expertise whatsoever.
Almost none of all the millions of treatments etc that are thrown at people distressed by hair loss have any effect whatsoever. Just make sure that you have a healthy diet and that any ill-health you might be experiencing is monitored/treated by a doctor.

unsync · 23/11/2024 16:59

Given your age, it's more likely to be peri / meno (depending where you're at). Best route is get your bloods checked by GP to rule out any deficiencies as others have said and maybe see if HRT is an option if it is hormonal.
