Christmas things not worth doing

charlieinthehaystack · 23/11/2024 12:49

you know the things you think you have to do then after you think why on earth did i bother?
many a time i have spent hours carefully putting the stickers on toys bikes etc to complete it then two minutes after kids open it all the stickers are ripped off!
you risk life and limb not to mention driving miles to get that toy that your youngster has begged for along with most of the kids in the UK but on Christmas day its played with for 2 minutes then discarded never to be seen again
similar to above you have that one guest you want to impress/who is awkward so you spend ages finding food you know they like at great expense then find out when they visit they no longer like it!

Also

Christmas Jumpers that you buy new, wear once and chuck out/donate to charity like everyone else.

When families post a photo all wearing matching christmas pjs. It’s giving Disney Adult.

As mentioned in another post, I have 8 of them plus t-shirts. Wore them at my last job. Most were purchased in the sales (ours were sold in sale 22nd Dec). These are my version of Xmas PJs.

I dare my former colleagues to wear the Lidl Xmas jumper at work.

housethatbuiltme · 23/11/2024 21:34

Christmas light trails/walks.

I wonder if its just a mumsnet thing (like going on a hike in the rain) but I just don't get it. They are cold, muddy, busy and woefully underwhelming... Id rather go to Blackpool and see the illuminations if I wanted to look at lights (but let be honest the electric fayre was over 100 years ago, electricity is standard now and we have all seen twinkly lights before).

I'm certainly not wandering the local streets aimlessly peering in peoples gardens/windows to get a glimpse at their lights either.

potatocakesinprogress · 23/11/2024 21:36

@SerafinasGoose you mean recycling bin, right? I thought everyone switched to paper tape and plastic free wrapping paper years ago, or reused gift bags

What's paper tape?

xogossipgirlxo · 23/11/2024 21:48

Drinking these pretty looking christmas coffees or hot chocolate. 99% of cases they taste awful, not worth the money and calories

The pyjama thing. You're so right about the blokes. And I`'ve got to say that I always wonder about the underwear aspect of people who wear pyjamas as a fashion choice. I mean, are they pyjamas that you might theoretically have slept in, in which case does dad spend Christmas morning with his bits flopping about? Or is there a full set of supportive underthings beneath the sportive cartoon penguins or whatever? If so, why wear PJs? Why not just wear clothes? Ditto mum and a bra? Old person, so I find these questions quite thought provoking.
Elf on the Shelf ought to be banned as an offence against aesthetic sensibility.

🤣🤣🤣

People who wear PJs without underwear baffle me. Doesn’t the seam of the bottoms go up your bum crack?!

Auburngal · 23/11/2024 21:58

Those light trails. Just find out the best lights displays around your area and drive around them. Go on your Spotted group and ask where are the houses with the best lights displays and you will get answers.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 23/11/2024 22:00

and no one has mentioned the matching jumper for the dog !!!

or those dog owners that feel the need to dress their dog in a Father Christmas outfit etc.

yes my dogs have jumpers and coats, but for a reason - either to keep warm ( one is 17 ) or to keep dry ( yes I do have towels but it is easier just to dry heads and paws and not whole bodies )

Threelittleduck · 23/11/2024 22:02

Hate Elf on the Shelf. Have never done it and refused to join in with it at nursery (we were supposed to take it in turns to move the elf and cause mischief but right from the start I said no). And Secret Santa. I never knew what to buy the other person. Thankfully I'm a SAHM this year so no Secret Santa and no bloody elf.

Oh, it’s not christmas jumpers in themselves.

Just the idea of buying something new, wearing once for ‘Christmas jumper day’ and then chucking/donating. Then doing it again next year.

I know not everyone does that.
If people rewear/wear them a lot then it’s no different to any other item of clothing.. and have no opinion on that.

WickerMam · 23/11/2024 22:49

A new set of PJs is pretty much the only time I get my kids into a matching set, and I do like them in nice new PJs xmas morning. Also, opening stockings in bed together first thing is my favourite bit of the day. I even had fun with the elf last year.

Things I can't be bothered with - xmas TV, baking, in fact any food that isn't a case of bunging it in the oven. I cook healthy meals the rest of the year, frozen roasties and supermarket turkey joint will do.

PassingStranger · 23/11/2024 23:29

You’ll get some grinch come along and say ‘all of it. We don’t bother anymore.

They are the sensible ones. They can think for themselves instead of carrying on with a charade every year that they've been partaking in all their life because of brainwashing since birth.

That's all Xmas is.
What the hell has it got to do with anyone that they concocted a fair story about a baby being born years ago in a Stable. Even if it did happen, it's never been proved that it was Dec 25th.
It's got nothing to do with our lives today anyway.
It's pathetic.
People would be alot happier if they started thinking for themselves, instead of doing things because its what they have always done.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 23/11/2024 23:55

@PlumpHobbit 'Likewise I dont get dressing up smartly Xmas day when you're about to eat a tonne of food.'

I found the answer some years ago, for only £20. I bought a black sequinned skirt with an elasticated waist. Yowzah! Christmassy AND comfy after a huge lunch. One day a year I wear it with a low-neck, long-sleeved black top & a nice necklace. It'll last me forever.

tiger2691 · 24/11/2024 08:34

Homemade Christmas cake.
Christmas cards.
Mince pies, unless I've had a joint.

Well aren't you a happy little peach. 😂
Thankfully it will never stop.

FanofLeaves · 24/11/2024 09:19

Was on the southbank yesterday… mulled wine at £7.95!

it’s so sickly and barely any alcohol so it’s not for me anyway, but that is extortionate

MrsSunshine2b · 24/11/2024 10:37

I love Christmas and all the traditions; making the dinner, Boxing Day buffets, wrapping gifts (although I have to do them a few at a time in the run up!), filling the next box in the advent calendar every night and reading a Christmassy book every night, but there are a few things I don't do.

Elf on the Shelf- I don't understand the concept. A naughty elf who spies on you to stop you being naughty? And having to deliberately make a mess which you'll have to clean up the next day, not to mention the amount of waste.

Christmas Markets/shopping events- overpriced, freezing cold if outdoor, DD asking for sugary fatty treats the whole way round, the food is overpriced and disappointing, and I've never found any gifts worth buying; none of my friends and relatives will appreciate a £40 handcrafted wooden bowl.
Winter Wonderland- did that once, it was horrible, dirty, crowded and overstimulating.

Matching PJs- I like picking up Christmassy clothes cheaply from Vinted/charity shops and we have Christmas PJs, but the matching ones seem like such a scam. They are so overpriced for rubbish quality. And if we buy ones for all of us this year, next year, DH and I still have pyjamas that fit and have barely been worn but the kids need new ones, so we no longer match and need 4 sets of new pyjamas!

Scrooge is in da house! 🙄🙄🙄

Makingchocolatecake · 24/11/2024 16:53

Putting tags on presents. I just write names on them.

Christmas eve boxes. It's just impatient.

Elf on the shelf- child cctv. No thank you!

TheChosenTwo · 24/11/2024 17:04

@Makingchocolatecake its so much better writing directly on to the presents,
otherwise tags fall off and you have no idea who the present is for or from!
I do tend to buy sticker labels though as some of our paper is so patterned it’s hard to see where you’ve written but I don’t buy tags on strings anymore.

Umbrella15 · 24/11/2024 17:43

Xmas markets, always very crowded and just selling hot chocolate and mulled wine. Also xmas cards, why send cards to people you neber see any more. A waste of time and money.

Kentucky83 · 24/11/2024 17:48

Elf on the Shelf. We only did it because ours (a plushy elf) 'landed' in my Dad's apple tree a few years ago wanting to see DD so we did it for a few years and she (Elfish Presley) has now retired and lives with DD (now 8) permanently.

RavenhairedRachel · 24/11/2024 17:56

Christmas dinner. I would rather have soup or beans on toast and enjoy the day.

fetchacloth · 24/11/2024 18:02

Vinvertebrate · 23/11/2024 12:59

Trudging round a Christmas market, with eleventy billion other dead-eyed souls, in the pissing rain just to pay £15 for a burnt sausage and look at some overpriced tat.

Fuck that.

Yup. I feel the same 😎

Amazon voucher! They can buy what they what, problem solved!

Some of the ones I've done had been ridiculous, Secret Santa for £5. Or even £10. How on earth can you get something that's anything like a present for that?
