2nd thoughts about buying house with swimming pool next door

WiseGreyShark · 23/11/2024 09:53

We have found an ideal property for us but the next door neighbours have a swimming pool in their garden. It's built into the ground, not a inflated pool.

I am having second thoughts incase the pool floods or there are other problems. My wife loves the house and it ticks all the boxes.

The houses are detached if that makes a difference.

Any thoughts? Thanks

How near is the swimming pool to you?

BoobyDazzler · 23/11/2024 09:55

I thought you meant a municipal swimming pool and that would be a no from me due to the chlorine smell and the noise but I couldn’t get worked up about a pool in a neighbours garden although I guess that might be noisy in the summer too.

Not too bothered about the noise.

The way the kids next door scream in a temporary pool, it'd be a quick no from me!

Pickandmixmood · 23/11/2024 09:56

Possibility of constant screaming of brats in the summer would put me off

TheFlis · 23/11/2024 09:59

I know several people with pools in their gardens. I have never ever heard of one of them flooding.

Pottedpalm · 23/11/2024 09:59

Wouldn’t worry me; might feel a but jealous during the few days good weather we get, but you could make friends and be invited round.

BaronessBomburst · 23/11/2024 09:59

In what way do you think that the pool will flood?

Costacoffeeplease · 23/11/2024 10:01

We have had an in ground pool for 20+ years. It’s never flooded.

SallyWD · 23/11/2024 10:01

Wouldn't worry me at all. Wouldn't mind hearing people having fun in the pool. I certainly wouldn't worry about flooding! It's not a river and wouldn't flood enough to damage your property

Brats? You sound nice.

Chemenger · 23/11/2024 10:08

I don’t see how it can flood, unless the level of next door’s garden is higher.

Lincoln24 · 23/11/2024 10:10

Re the noise, the op hasn't even said if there are kids? Our neighbours have an outdoor pool that is used only by them - two adults.

Longhotsummers · 23/11/2024 10:12

Pools don’t flood but it’d be a no from me due to noise and that affecting my enjoyment of my garden during summer.

Movinghouseatlast · 23/11/2024 10:12

Do swimming pools blood regularly? I've never heard of that. Even domestic pools have an overflow. I went on holiday and it rained day and night for 7 days and our pool didn't flood.

I wouldn’t call them brats but I’d be worried about noisy pool parties all through summer

janeandmarysmum · 23/11/2024 10:18

My neighbours have a pool and when the children play in it it is very noisy. Due to the awful summer we've just had though, it's only been noisy two or three times recently.

Time40 · 23/11/2024 10:22

God, buy the house as soon as possible! Become their best friend and you can go swimming all summer.

To be serious, I've never heard of a domestic swimming pool flooding, or causing any other sort of technical problem.

kindlyensure · 23/11/2024 10:24

We have an inground, old-school pool (with a diving board, so deep). It's never flooded in the 40 years it's been there (maybe it's time!)

And yes - it's a lovely thing to have and to share and our neighbours are very welcome.

(Kids on trampolines are noisier, ime).

I would love a neighbour like this !🤣

Yep this was my first thought.

ginasevern · 23/11/2024 10:36

I'm not aware of swimming pools flooding as a common problem. What makes you think it is? I would however be wary of "pool parties" with lots of screaming kids and loud music throughout the summer.

cgwmtl · 23/11/2024 10:41

I'd be more bothered about the potential of constant noise in the summer. When you want to be relaxing in your garden there could be a whole pile of kids next door enjoying the pool and they are unlikely to be doing that quietly.
It depends on whether the neighbours have children and how old they are and how much it would annoy you if they are outside all day long in the summer playing in the pool.
Even if they don't have kids they might have noisy pool parties until late in the evening.
It wouldn't really bother me to be honest but if it does bother you or your wife then you should think again about the property.

Cerialkiller · 23/11/2024 10:44

I've designed in ground pools. They have overflows and any top up systems are either manual or the automatic ones have sensors. I've never heard of one flooding, and if they did it wouldn't be a tidel wave, more like a hosepipe being left on.

The only situation I might be wary of is if the garden with the pool is significantly higher and the pool was old. If the fabric of the pool leaks it might seep though to you but again this shouldn't be an issue in the UK where earthquakes and extreme heat/cold isn't a thing.

About the noise, ime people don't use their pool as much as you think, especially an unheated outdoor pool. On days over high 20s and special occasions maybe.

Buy the house!

I am nice but screaming brats are definitely not nice.
