To miss my city?

We had to leave as it’s just too damn expensive, but I loved it and I miss it so much, feel strangely homesick as my eldest child starts school next year and it makes the fact I’m probably never going ‘home’ real.

Which city is yours??

Icanttakethisanymore · 22/11/2024 19:15

I live in Yorkshire now but go to London every week for work. We left London when we had kids because although we could have afforded to stay, it would have felt like such a big financial commitment for very average home (£2m in the bit of North London we lived in). It’s also far from GPs and my mum adores our children. Leaving was the right thing to do for the kids and our parents but….Every time I’m there I get a massive pang of sadness that it’ll almost certainly never be my home again. I miss it so much ☹️

FelixtheAardvark · 22/11/2024 19:17

We left London over 30 years ago.
Still miss it, but we now have a new life in a small market town.

whereilived · 22/11/2024 19:21

Thanks … it isn’t London but similar price wise!

I moved too, I felt the same, kids went to school, then GCSEs than ALevels, off to Uni but have friends here they want to come back to.

I also get excited by the city! The buzz - I still miss it so much.

I miss my city every day! I have a lovely life in the countryside, my kids go to good schools, I have a bigger home than I would in the city etc etc but I miss the buzz, hubbub, diversity and food options!

LaurieFairyCake · 22/11/2024 20:20

You know you can move back after the kids leave uni Smile

It's what we did. A lovely (huge) flat in Blackheath the second the last child went to uni.

I can honestly say the last 8 years have been the biggest gift ever. On Wednesday I saw Mark Rylance in a play. I have a massive social life, SO much to do all the time.

And buses are £1.75 to get into town. And the hospital is literally 5 minutes from my house. And second lowest council tax in the country.

whereilived · 22/11/2024 20:24

I’ll be well into my 60s by then!

LaurieFairyCake · 22/11/2024 20:35

Well then you'll definitely need good health care and a hospital close by Grin

All my friends here are in their 60's and 70's, they're having a BALL

whereilived · 22/11/2024 20:36

I’m genuinely not sure we’d have enough money! I guess if we sold where we live now but even then it would only buy a small flat. I’m going to look on Rightmove now …

I’m from Cambridge, born and bred, and the thought of living elsewhere makes me nauseous! I couldn’t do it so no,you’re NBU

Vintagevixen · 22/11/2024 20:39

Me too. Born, raised and lived most of my life in London. Divorce drove me out, couldn't afford a place.

Nowhere else will ever be home though. Homesick a lot.

Sigh.

Moonlightstars · 22/11/2024 20:42

I grew up in a very desirable city but moved to a cheaper but much more fun one. Was a bit sad when kids were little but very glad I now live a life I can afford compared to where I would have been!

Miss my city (London) every day.
No longer work there now either so will have sporadic visits from now on.

OtterOnAPlane · 22/11/2024 21:39

YANBU. I feel slightly sick at the thought of ever having to leave my city (hopefully not on the cards).

It's got grime and social problems... but they're my grime and social problems. And art/ food / people / job opportunities matched by just a few spots on earth.
