Life’s to short

My MIL is extremely petty and is currently not really talking to us or SIL and her family. Not sure why there was a slight disagreement about hers and FIL behaviour which can be unpleasant and selfish.
however this was spoken about calmly and we thought all sorted. Apparently not….
I can not understand why you would treat family like this life is too short. It’s Christmas coming and it would be lovely to spend it together as a family. I lost my Dad a few years ago and it baffles me that anyone can be like this.
I would give anything to spend Christmas with my dad again and here MIL is making things unpleasant.

What was the discussion about their behaviour?

I agree with you that life is too short to fall out with family over small things. Some people cannot take anything they see as criticism though, no matter how pleasantly and calmly done - they just react to it badly.

I agree. That's why I don't tell people that they are behaving in an unpleasant and selfish way unless it's absolutely unavoidable and it's clearly worth jeopardising the peace.

Yes and I would agree unfortunately this was unavoidable there was a lot of hurt and unnecessary nasty comments and criticisms that had no benefit and were said purely to hurt and upset people

Do you really want to spend Christmas with people you describe as unpleasant and selfish, what would be lovely about that?

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/11/2024 18:31

It must have been pretty serious for both their children to mount an intervention and tell them. They’re probably shocked and hurt and don’t want to spend Christmas with any of you. That’s understandable.

What did they do that prompted all of this?

Seashellssanctuary · 22/11/2024 18:47

Christmas is not about spending time with families if they don't get on.

Quite the opposite, in fact, unresolved issues should means its best for everyone that they are not together
