When did you lose weight, breastfeeding

Is it a myth?

I'm 8 weeks in and the scales have barely moved. I'm EB.

In fact. I heard some women put on weight BF and I'm starting to think my body is doing just that.

Or am I being impatient/unreasonable as the weight loss comes later?

It makes no difference to the future of my BF journey but I had heard BF melts your pregnancy fat and I'm thinking I'm not one of those women.

I sat on the sofa EBF and scoffing chocolate. By the time baby was five months old I was smaller than I was before conceiving.

Apart from the initial drop of weight immediately after birth, I didn’t lose the rest of the weight until I completely stopped breastfeeding and then a substantial amount dropped off really quickly (a couple of dress sizes almost over night!)
this happened with both my babies!

It worked for me.

But then I'd only put a stone on because of sickness.

Lost two stone very quickly - but I know it doesn't affect everyone the same way. And really, it's not ideal to be lighter and thinner than you were before pregnancy

I never lost weight until I stopped breastfeeding. My mum and sister were both stick thin from it but for some reason it just never did the same for me. As soon as I stopped it dropped off fast.

WellyBellyBoo · 28/12/2024 17:32

Not much in first 3-4 months, most of it when DD was bigger and consuming more milk between 3-8 months

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 28/12/2024 17:35

When my youngest started sleeping through the night at 5 years old and I stopped eating sugar to keep me going through the tiredness.

Breastfeeding / not breastfeeding made no difference it was the tiredness that was my issue.

BaronessBomburst · 28/12/2024 17:36

I didn't lose any weight until I stopped, but then it came off easily and I was soon back in all my old clothes. I was 42 as well, so there's always hope!

elfshenanigans · 28/12/2024 17:36

I didn't. BF made me ravenous. I ate so much. and even put on weight initially. Took a good 18 month to lose all the pregnancy weight. I think it's a bit of a myth that women lose weight whilst BF.

doodleschnoodle · 28/12/2024 17:36

About two years after I stopped.

phoenixrosehere · 28/12/2024 17:43

When I started eating more. My lifestyle is pretty healthy but I wasn’t eating enough calories and my body was holding onto the weight. Once I was, it began coming off.

buttonousmaximous · 28/12/2024 17:46

It took a good 2/3 but then the weight dropped quickly also helped by the fact I was dairy free for my sons allergies. I lost a good couple of stone.

Katemax82 · 28/12/2024 19:51

I carried around an extra stone during my long winded 4 year breastfeeding slog with my youngest. The stone more or less dropped off when I stopped

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 28/12/2024 19:57

I wish I could remember what it was called but I used to use something online that told you interesting info/tips and benefits each week you were breastfeeding. I remember the 7 (maybe 9?) month+ mark was a ‘fat burning period’ because of the age of your baby and composition of the milk. It’s certainly been true for me both times- I lost loads of weight from this point onwards. I think most people have stopped by this point though or aren’t feeding as much.

Purplestarballoon · 28/12/2024 19:59

I still looked pregnant for the first 3 months EBF my first but after 6 months the weight melted off and I was the smallest I’d been as an adult. Piled it back on when I stopped.
Everyone is different just like every baby is different!

WalterdelaMare · 28/12/2024 20:03

I was the exception in that I couldn’t not gain weight when breastfeeding. I got thinner and thinner. 3 weeks pp, I was the lightest I’ve ever been as an adult. But I also did not eat any extra calories as I wasn’t hungry. Most of my friends were the complete opposite.

LouH1981 · 28/12/2024 20:12

I lost weight with my first in the first few weeks or so but he was an absolute guzzler! It soon went back on once I finished 🙈
Didn’t shift any with my second but then she took less, I was older (middle aged spread?) and we were in lockdown so not as active.
