Just eaten pink beef burger!

We cooked them in the frying pan for 10 mins + and checked with an internal thermometer- which showed 77 C and I believe that’s correct as it needs to be 160 F or 71 C. So temp was supposedly correct.
But as you can see from the photo it was this colour inside! I took a bite without realising - now I’m really worried! They are really thick. I feel like the juices weren’t as clear as they could be either.
I have included the packaging too.

Also excuse the cheese and condiments, I always go overboard when it comes to burgers!

I don't understand why you put a meat thermometer in a burger, rather than just cutting open slightly to check. They're designed for things like roasts surely. And the cooking instructions are guidance only, use your own judgement.

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/11/2024 19:46

I ate a meatball that was pink in the middle and was laid up with food poisoning for over a week. The good side was I list half a stone.

Bobbingtons · 21/11/2024 19:54

To avoid risk premade burgers should be cooked through, usually because of the risk of botulism but there can be other bacteria. The reason for this is because the bacteria live on the surface of red meet, unlike white meat where the bacteria live inside the meat. It's probably low risk if it was bought to temperature.
Rare burgers should only be cooked from freshly ground beef which should be ground and shaped just before cooking which is why in the UK restaurant burgers need to be cooked through as most restaurants don't prepare their burgers to order but have them premade.
There is a small chance you could get sick although over 70 degrees internally you should be fine

Miyagi99 · 21/11/2024 19:58

It’s beef so fine pink.

Shade17 · 21/11/2024 20:00

The French would consider that ruined! You’ll be absolutely fine.

No it's not fine pink just because it's beef

Why not, she’s checked the temp, it’s cooked through? Ground beef can stay pink. It’s not a cheap frozen beef burger.

I eat raw mince out of the frying pan when I cook spag bol, so this would be well cooked to me!

Thank god for you. I thought I was the only one.

My objection was to the phrase "it's beef, it's fine pink". That phrase is too simple and could harm someone

I think you’re nitpicking a bit as beef is fine to be eaten pink. Obviously if it’s rancid, off, not been stored properly, previously frozen, got out of a bin etc etc probably not a good idea but none of that is relevant here. I stand by beef is fine pink.

I stand by that's too simple. It depends on how it's prepared.

I’m just hoping I won’t be throwing up tonight - how long until food poisoning comes on if I am to get ill?

I don’t know why so many people are saying it is ok to eat raw beef mince. This is absolutely not true . Steak can be served rare and certain types of steak freshly minced. Regular Beef mince should be well cooked to prevent food poisoning such as E. coli .

having said that chances are you will be fine . I ate pink chicken once I was served in a restaurant and had eaten some before I noticed 🤢 I was fine

EnYar · 21/11/2024 20:45

You need to chill.

If you’re not cooking rancid beef, of course pink is fine.

Missmarymack2 · 21/11/2024 20:46

@roastiepotato i agree with your comments.

It varies. Mine came on in 24 hours. Unless it wasn't the meatball, it was the tummy bug I caught from someone I visited, in which case it was two days.

Pogpog21 · 21/11/2024 20:49

It’s absolutely fine

VacuumPacked · 21/11/2024 20:52

good thing you don’t live in France

ohtowinthelottery · 21/11/2024 20:54

I've never used a meat thermometer in my life and I'm still alive!
I'd say it depends on the quality of the burgers. Supermarket burgers, I'd cook so they're not pink in the middle. Good quality butchers burgers I'd eat pink in the middle.

There's a good burger joint in my town which serves top quality burgers and they're always like that in the middle. The waiting staff always warn you. If you don't fancy pink meat then you order the smashed patty instead as that cooks all the way through.

It isn’t fine pink though, that just isn’t true at all.

Dancingflamingos · 21/11/2024 20:57

They weren’t cheap burgers from Ocado.

No it isn't fine pink because it's beef. The above post explains why.

No matter how rare a steak the outside is cooked so it's OK. But when a beefburger is made the surface bacteria ends up spread through so it needs to be cooked throughout.

The reason beef burgers aren't meant to be eaten pink is because of the possibility of bacteria due to the mincing process. You'll likely be fine but next time just put them back in the pan/cut in to it slightly to check it's cooked? A meat thermometer isn't likely to be accurate on something so small (ie not a large joint of meat).

^ This exactly
I'm surprised more people don't know this.

Mossstitch · 21/11/2024 21:08

My son ate one like that in a posh gastro type pub in the Lake District, let's just say it was a close shave to him getting back to our accommodation which was about an hour down country lanes. He was glad that the bathroom was so small that he could reach the sink from the toilet..........🤮💩
So I think the consequences would have happened but now op. He was absolutely fine the next day and requesting macdonalds for breakfast🤢
