Chemist gave me the wrong canesten, who is to blame

Rushing around with young dd yesterday late afternoon and nipped to the chemist to get her medicine and some Canesten for me as I’ve been itchy down below and suspect thrush. I got called to the counter with a young, not friendly guy, who seemed to be training a young woman. I asked for the medicine for Dd and the canesten, paid etc whilst dd was whinging for things. We drove home and I noticed when I got in that he’d given me a box ot Canesten for toes/feet. It was too late to go back so I texted to ask dh to pick up from a different chemist near his work on the way back.
Today i took the box back with the receipt, all
unopened and explained it to the same guy on the counter, all a bit embarrassing talking in front of others about vaginal thrush!
He was pretty rude to me, no apology at all and really quite put out about me requesting a refund, saying they don’t usually allow it. He had an awful manner, no please or thank you and actually made me feel quite embarrassed
Who was in the wrong here?

The fault does not lie with the customer because the customer was buying a product from a qualified professional. The professional should have checked what they were selling. If I buy a product from a professional I expect them to know what to ask me.

a qualified professional? the person on pharmacy register is rarely the pharmacit

op: can i have a tube of canestan please
assistant: here we go (and hands over product very clearly marked for athletes foot as pictured as above)
op: pays and leaves

op failed to clarify
assistant failed to ask
op failed to look at what she was paying for

LittleBearPad · 22/11/2024 07:35

You should have checked what you were given.

MyOpalViewer · 22/11/2024 07:46

most of us would mildly kick ourselves for not clarifying or looking at what buying rather than flounder around for someone to blame

So you’re saying that in a pharmacy you have to have pharmacist knowledge of what you’re buying and then check the qualifications of the person working in the pharmacy?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 22/11/2024 09:02

You don't actually have to ask for it all. You can simply walk over and pick it up off the shelf.

TwoShades1 · 22/11/2024 09:26

He was definitely in the wrong, as just asking for “canesten” is not clear. It’s just a brand name. He should have clarified which product you wanted. Unless you somehow requested the one for feet by accident??

What did you ask for the first time? If you just asked for "canesten" then it's on you to check what you were given. It's just a brand name you need to be more specific. If you asked for "canesten cream for thrush" and were given something else, that's on them.

I agree. Up to you to make sure you got the right one. Unless you asked for a specific type.

Coconutter24 · 22/11/2024 09:40

You’re both at fault, pharmacist should have asked you what it was for so he could get the right product. You should have looked at the box properly because then you would have noticed it had a foot on and was the incorrect type and you could have sorted it there and then.
Does it really matter though who was at fault? There was an error not a big one, it got sorted, why the need to place blame to make you feel better?

Dontfeedthemaftermidnight · 22/11/2024 12:09

@sweeneytoddsrazor It’s all behind the counter, have to ask for it

It’s the same cream, just different packaging

Exactly - you can use either, it really doesn't matter what the packaging says.

ThinWomansBrain · 22/11/2024 15:08

I'd expect the chemist to ask what the medication was for if its available for more than one treatment - and to be apologetic that he or one of his colleagues hadn't bothered too.
I was amused last night - I decided to buy myself a heated throw - Amazon decided the perfect pairing was a pack of Canesten. I haven't purchased any for at least five years - Is there a hidden side effect to heated throws I should be aware of? (I didn't check which type of Canesten😁)

PixieLaLar · 22/11/2024 22:30

At the end of the day you asked for canesten, he gave you canesten, you didn’t check the box till you got home and realised it was 1% not 2% - which you could have still used.

You got a refund, but that’s not good enough you want an apology and the counter guy to take full accountability.

Mountain out of molehill springs to mind!

Ivegotteabags · 22/11/2024 22:36

I’ve had the one for athlete’s foot before on prescription for persistent thrush. When I queried it with pharmacist they said it’s the one with hydrocortisone and it’s the right one.
now I just buy it over the counter, I make sure I say it’s not for my feet just to double check

roastiepotato · 22/11/2024 22:36

Did it work? That's the main thing really

Dontfeedthemaftermidnight · 21/11/2024 16:07

@ButterCrackers I got the refund…but reluctantly and no apology or smile etc, just very rude

You said he was pretty unfriendly first time around so I think he is just that way.
