To think a large amount of money would solve all of our problems?

I don’t do the lottery or anything but we can dream …

Money can solve a lot of problems, though plenty of people who get a windfall squander it and end up back in the same position.

Here's the thing, though - while money doesn't cure illnesses, it definitely does make them easier to manage and improves your life no end.

My father has Parkinson's disease. Obviously, being a billionaire wouldn't make any difference to his health. He'd still have an incurable, disabling and progressively worsening condition. But if he had huge amounts of money, his life and that of my mother (and us kids) would be massively improved. He wouldn't have to live in a care home away from my mum - he could live in his own home with adaptations and live-in nursing care. My parents could have had an adapted vehicle and a driver to take them anywhere they wanted to go, instead of my mum struggling to get my dad on and off a bus in a wheelchair and injuring herself in the process. He could have lots of physical therapy and mental health support that isn't otherwise available to him. So no, it wouldn't 'solve the problem' of him having Parkinson's, but it definitely would solve most of the accompanying difficulties that go alongside that, which for him are actually harder to cope with than the disease itself.

Exactly what I was going to say only you said it better. My lovely dad had Parkinson’s it’s a bastard.

Absolutely. Of course there's plenty money can't fix, but (assuming it's not an obscene amount which could cause different issues) I do believe that it would solve the vast majority of the most pressing problems, here and for almost everyone I know. Off the top of my head we could:

Sort out pensions which for me in particular is a big worry (self employed, screwed by xh, etc)

Finish the house and get a cleaner and some help with cooking/meal planning

Build a garden room of some sort to enable a closed off workspace, which would help enormously

Get any necessary dental treatment without panic/borrowing/stress

Arrange private health investigations/treatment where needed

Replace knackered old cars with more reliable and safer ones

Work fewer hours, enabling me to see my elderly parents more and do more for them.

Also more time to keep up with/help out friends and other family, all of whom are scattered around the country and many of whom are having a tough time.

Go on holiday! We haven't been away in many years as I can't afford to take time off work (except a 3 day honeymoon last year, which our guests kindly paid for). We would so love to be able to take my daughters away.

Oh, and buy new clothes/shoes. Much as we all love Vinted, I'd really love more time/money/headspace to look less shit.

I have been so skint that I sat in the dark because I couldn't afford a replacement lightbulb. I also stole a baking potato and two bananas as no money for food (and I am well aware that many, many people have it much harder). I have recently inherited. Life changing amount. Sadly, this money comes with its own problems. I'd rather be sitting in the dark again if it meant I could have DM back. I do realise that I am also very fortunate though.

I suspect we hear more about lottery winners who go on to become unhappy are far more newsworthy than the many lucky winners who have a brilliant future and can help their nearest and dearest.

Having been very skint when the DC were young and not at all skint some time later I can confirm I prefer the latter. However we weren’t un happy when we were poorer, just more stressed. There are so many extremely unhappy yet very wealthy individuals around.
