Drivers scraping a porthole in their windscreen

Fiis · 21/11/2024 10:36

Drivers need to leave their home at least 5 mins (10 mins for snow) earlier to scrape off ice and snow off their cars.

Fed up of seeing drivers just scraping a porthole - about a fifth of the windscreen, leaving the rest of the windows still covered with ice or snow. This is stupid and illegal

Also when it snows heavily, people don't remove the snow from their car roofs. Seen it where they braked and the snow on the front half of the roof falls onto the windscreen. Wipers can't cope with that snow - plus besides, you can damage them if you attempt to shift thick snow using wipers. They have to physically get out - causing traffic problems.

Also drivers that pour water onto their windscreens, don't realise that the water freezes. I sprained my wrist a few years ago after slipping on ice caused by a driver doing this. Warm water can crack your windscreen.

any chance of a link?

I'm crap with links but it's in 'Chat' and called "I caused chaos on the road today"

Heated windscreen. Clears in under 1 min.

As a short person I can not reach all of my roof even if I use a long handled brush. Same with scraping windscreen, I have to leave a strip in the middle that I use deicer on. I have a small car.

well that doesn't wash in Germany - you have to make arrangements for the snow to be cleared off your roof. Harsh? yes. But i doubt the police would be worried about a small sliver if it is clear you had at least cleared what you could. If it was enough to obstruct your windscreen if it slid down? then they'd prick up their ears.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 21/11/2024 12:57

Lots of people don't clear snow from their headlights. But then plenty of folk don't seem to realise that in lots of wintry conditions they should be using their lights....

Get one of those frost shields that goes across your windscreen. Saves loads of time and effort. Or cycle. I just get on the bike and cycle away.

Same here! Not everyone is tall enough to reach the middle of the top of their car.

There’s a stupid woman in my village who gets her children to hang out the windows shouting directions with her windscreen totally frosted up apart from a narrow slit. I look forward to the day when she drives into something.

I don't know what it is with modern cars, but my last couple have a really hard job of demisting the interior. I'll happily scrape the exterior, but by the time that's done, I get back in and despite having the blower on, the inside of the windscreen will be completely misted up, and often frozen. It takes ages for that to go.
When I first started driving, it would take seconds to demist inside. My first car had blowers so strong that if I angled them right I could dry my hair on the way to work 😆

That normally happens if your ventilation system is set to internally circulate the air rather than bringing in fresh air, It's the sliding button usually underneath where you fan switch is.

Short and pregnant! I ended up buying a windshield cover this year because there was not a chance of me reaching across … worked surprisingly well this morning .

Thank you 🙏 I'll try that.

I did this yesterday 🙈 my scraper has mysteriously gone missing since last year

I did this also yesterday. Looked every where for my scraper, had to use my Nectar card in the end, had the heaters on so the ice wasnt too thick and cleared all the windows.

Turns out DP had borrowed my scraper and left it in his car. Ordered a new one from Amazon so we have one each.

One of the good things about having an ev is that you can sit in bed drinking your morning coffee and set your car to defrost with an app on your phone. Mine was fully defrosted and a balmy 22° when I left the house this morning 😀

My non-EV Volvo has an app for this too. Plus a heated windscreen which must be the greatest automotive invention after the wheel and the engine. Closely followed by the heated steering wheel! 😍

If only we had traffic police to prosecute a few people, it's not as if the weather this week was not forecasted.

Stretchedresources · 21/11/2024 13:29

Yanbu. They need to get out 15 mins earlier to defrost and remove all snow. It's illegal and the police do occasionally bollock people for it.

Warm water doesn’t crack windscreens. I pour it on my screen most days in winter. Takes 2 minutes.

Don't get a VW then. DH's takes absolutely ages.

In my car (BMW), I don't suffer with the windows misting up and putting on the rear window heater also clears any moisture off the wing mirrors by the time I've got to the end of my road.

Driving DH's car the other day and his car doesn't mist, but it honestly took about 20 minutes for his wing mirrors to clear. I couldn't see a bloody thing in them on the motorway, so had to be extra careful changing lanes. If I'd have known it was so useless I'd have cleared them before I left, but it was too late by then.

GoldenPineapple15 · 21/11/2024 13:57

My old Ford might not look posh , but I would not swap the heated windscreen and seats for another make .

Fords are definitely the GOATs of the heated windscreen.

When I bought my car (second hand) it didn't come with leather seats. Not having to deal with a burning or freezing bum, depending on the weather, has been wonderful! If I never had leather seats again, I would be happy!

Now, a heated steering wheel is a very tempting feature!

@LlynTegid - Roads Policing in Scotland posted on X this morning that they'd pulled someone over for having a completely frosted and condensation window.

As I read somewhere, the police can't be everywhere, but they can be anywhere!

Locutus2000 · 21/11/2024 14:08

I can thoroughly recommend something like this combined with some warm water for a super-quick clear, takes snow off the roof too. They last forever.

Warm is good, hot/boiling is not.

Ford had the patent for heated front windscreens for years didn't they.
I remember buying my 17 year old DD an old Fiesta and the first winter she had it, I was out there scraping my much newer, more expensive car, trying to get the ice off. She came out and had driven off within a couple of minutes😀

Heated screens are amazing and since Ford lost the patent other manufacturers have adopted them more widely.

It boggles my mind however that my S-reg Fiesta had one and my sister's otherwise well specced Audi Q7 does not. The previous owner ticked most of the option boxes but not that one. I'd take a heated screen over the seats and steering wheel every time.

Brefugee · 21/11/2024 14:55

i have a garage, i don't need a heated windscreen tho. And Audi charge shedloads for every ticked extra box (if i had no garage, deffo yes to the heated windscreen, but always no to heated seats)

That is fine until you hit the road after losing control on black ice. In freezing conditions when the road is damp studded tyres for bicycles are a good idea if you can get ones that fit.
