Can’t sleep, just stood on dead rat!!!

IsThisIt39 · 21/11/2024 04:59

I woke up about an hour ago and went downstairs to get a drink, didn’t turn the light on do I didn’t wake up too much. Then, on my way back, there was something in between the door stopping it closing.
I thought it was a sock and kicked it with my bare foot. It was cold and wet and furry 😱🤢. So I’d squished the thing in the doorway!!
I didn’t turn the light on as I realised what it was in cold horror!

I woke my husband up to get him to deal with it as I didn’t want to see it, and he dutifully sorted it, thankfully. He is a hero.

It was a flipping massive rat. It’s the most disgusting thing I’ve ever stood in, cat diarrhoea would have been a dream in comparison.

I can’t sleep now, I had dead rat blood on my foot, I don’t know if I’ll ever feel clean again.

Obviously I’ve washed in extremely hot water and plenty of soap but it doesn’t feel enough. Also disinfected everywhere the carcass may have been dragged through. Ewwww!
cat will be treated for worms first thing. I’ve gone right off him, this is why he’s not usually allowed out at night, and the one time I forget to put the cats in night lockdown, this happens.
Am I being unreasonable to be so revolted that I can’t sleep?! I was having such a good sleep before this!

Not surprised you’d have trouble sleeping after that, but at least it was dead!

It could have been worse!

Autumn1990 · 21/11/2024 05:08

Not pleasant but it was dead. What an awesome cat though. You should be delighted with him. Won’t be any furries living in your garden.

Yep, a nightmare. I hate rats with a passion, filthy vermin. Managed to wipe out a good chunk of the world with their fleas. I feel like hopping in a shower just after looking at a picture of one 🤣

Tarkan · 21/11/2024 05:14

I once did something similar thinking something on the floor at the bottom of the stairs was a fallen pair of gloves and kicked it with my bare foot.

It was a (rather squishy) dog turd.

You have my sympathies as I fully understand the feeling of how you don't think that foot will ever feel clean again. You've got a good DH for sorting it out though.

We had a rat moved in to our kitchen while we were on holiday years ago and the cats completely ignored it. One was a kitten and I kept thinking she was the rat! Other cat massive pigeon slayer but was fine living with a rat. I was 6 months pregnant so the worst possible time to have a ratty guest. Had that song in my head constantly. I was brave enough to go in the kitchen one day and thought ‘oh, I wonder if it’s eating the bird food in the drawer under the oven. So opened it to check. The fucker was IN THE DRAWER!!! Husband said he knew I’d found the rat by my scream.

Husband managed to trap it after a few days of baiting a humane trap and surveying kitchen with night cam to check it was just one. Finally he caught her (Whitney as she became known) and released in early in the morning in a local park. After 3 or so days, his humane attitude got frustrating, but I did respect his kindness, he will not kill things.

There wasn’t enough bleach to clean the kitchen after the eviction. And I had continuous hyperemesis gravidarum, so the rat in the kitchen did not help that.
I don’t wish them harm but fucking hell, they have traumatised me!!

Thank goodness it was dead and is gone. Don't you worm the cats regularly in any event?

Yes, but they have to be treated again if they do a murder.

Weirdly this happened to us the other day - my partner trod on a cold dead rat coming down in his bare feet. Our cats do bring in mice but not rats usually. Tbh I'd be concerned if it's cold that someone is taking a less humane approach than your husband and putting down poison. These were my thoughts given rat was cold and not usually something the cats would bring down - that they'd found it dead already. I'm relieved they didn't eat it.

ToxicKat · 21/11/2024 05:34

Gosh I couldn't cope, this is dreadful! Why do yall allow an animal in your home.. all that hair, poo, mud, and dead rats.. no.. no pets for me!

I did start worrying about that but as it was squishy 🤢, rigour mortise hadn’t yet occurred. I am so disgusted!! My condolences to your partner for experiencing this same horror!
I don’t think the cat had eaten it, it was his first kill as far as I know. I will ask my husband tomorrow if it looked like it had been a bit eaten. Yuck, so much yuck!!!

I trod on a slug once (twice actually, different occasions, same kitchen). I spent a long while scrubbing the underside of my foot with a hard nail brush in an attempt to get rid of the sensation.

Oh God that reminds me (and OP, this story is much much much more gruesome than yours to the point you can be thankful that your experience (as disgusting as it was) has no lasting consequences).

*I knew of this story having see him in a Youtube video years ago but just learned that this young man died in 2018.

OMG, that sounds absolutely dreadful!😥

PortiasBiscuit · 21/11/2024 06:18

They’re just little mammals, not that different from any other creatures, I have 5 fancy rats. They are charming, intelligent and clean. They keep their beds immaculate, chucking out bedding when it gets too dirty and replacing it with clean. They also use litter trays, generally pooing in one place in their cage,
They know their names individually.
They get such a bad rap and people are utterly vile to them, but it’s only because they are so adaptable and can exploit us humans so well.
Im just saying, try to have a sense of proportion, kicking anything dead is horrible, but a rat is really no worse than any other creature.

Sounds like emotional intelligence and communication skills could maybe do with some work in your household OP:

1 DH is saying ’put nursery staff in their place’ when apparently what he actually means is ‘politely suggest to them the behaviour is age appropriate’. Either way, sounds like listening to and taking on board other people’s opinions or experiences isn’t his strong point.

2 As per above, DH lambasting you with same critical comment over and over isn’t empathetic, isn’t helpful, and shows no awareness of or respect for your feelings or perspective.

3 Your repeated resort to “fuck off” is also unhelpful and unproductive and suggests you find it difficult to communicate effectively when upset.

4 Neither of you were able to contain your emotions / desire to discuss this until after then children were in bed, and apparently failed to anticipate things would get heated, or stop before things got to this point. Consequence: your children witnessed this behaviour from you.

Your child is young and needs role models! This is absolutely and 100% the right time to be addressing behavioural problems.

Think about how often your child sees the following from you:

  • talking about differences of opinion calmly and respectfully.
  • coping with strong emotions without taking them out on others.
  • Explaining what you mean / how you feel with clarity .
  • Listening to each other with empathy

He is obviously finding these skills hard himself (he’s only small) but he needs YOU BOTH to show him how.

That is way worse than my experience, I’m so sorry for you! I did think it was lucky it wasn’t still alive and frighted and wounded, it could have been brought to my kids or my bedroom 😱 I spent hours cleaning up, there was blood up to the top of the stairs (which had a new carpet a month ago 🥺) and inexplicably splattered on the wall, and an ORGAN on some overdue children’s library books (husband attended to the organ! I can’t really return them now! I’m not sure the organ wasn’t powered out when I tried the close the door on the ‘sock’. apparently it was a massive rat 🤢
So grim!!

Make sure there's no entry points like holes behind things in the kitchen or bathroom. And seal with wire wool and block if there is.
That's really horrible to have to see it, but as others say it's good it's dead and out in the open. Rather than dead and stuck inside the walls.
If you don't have cats already I'd be investing in one!
