Hi. Boiler at zero, think a radiator is leaking. Spoke to insurance, They said they will send someone. Tomorrow I guess. Kids are over 5 so not vulnerable BUT MY ITS Cold.

They said we could have 100 towards accommodation. Does that put the premium up more though next time, are we better to use it or suck it up and pu on electric blankets and use hwb

positing for traffic will decide in next 30 mins, nearest premier in is 30 mins away

For one night I'd suck it up and just wrap up.

Abigaillovesholidays · 20/11/2024 20:05

As you are already claiming, you may aswell take the money for accommodation

PrincessofWells · 20/11/2024 20:05

Well, both my partner and me grew up in properties with no central heating so I think you should get a grip, put extra blankets on the beds, and show your children what resilience is.

Catza · 20/11/2024 20:06

I think it is quite likely that your premium will go up. But it might anyway if you are getting a repairman. More importantly, though, I am not leaving my house for love nor money. It’s almost bedtime when our heating will be off anyway and I would much rather stay home than schlep to a hotel.

WeeOrcadian · 20/11/2024 20:07

For one night, I'd just make it fun, blankets on beds and socks to sleep in

It will increase your premium, there is no way of knowing how much by. And you'd have to declare it for future quotes.

Overthebow · 20/11/2024 20:07

I’d suck it up for one night. Warm blankets and hot drinks.

Abigaillovesholidays · 20/11/2024 20:08

But you need to consider the time...by the time you've got your things together and got there- is it even worth it?

Thedishwasherbroke · 20/11/2024 20:08

For one night I’d probably use a fan heater or similar to take the chill off one room then all go to bed in that room with some hot water bottles, electric blankets and layers. I couldn’t be bothered packing and driving that distance.

DoublePasta · 20/11/2024 20:09

I'd just go to bed.

Ceebs85 · 20/11/2024 20:10

I'd suck it up for one night, kids share a bed if they're small enough. Hot water bottles all round and extra blankets

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/11/2024 20:10

I didn't use central heating pretty much all of last winter because I couldn't afford it. I'd have a trip to Argos, get a halogen heater and an electric blanket and wrap up. It wouldn't occur to me to go to a hotel because heating is broken.

My nearest premier inn is 5 mins away so I’d be there in a shot!! But I have to remind myself yours is further away. Hmmm for 1 night maybe just hot water bottles and bed socks

Bubblebuttress · 20/11/2024 20:11

Love all of these so far. Girls are treating it as an adventure. Im waiting for the home emergency team to text. Mulled wine actually welcome right now.

Did you have no heating at all ? Did you have coal fires ? There is a difference between not having central heating and having no heating at all. Did you have a way of heating water ?

MissEloiseBridgerton · 20/11/2024 20:12

My heating is always off overnight no matter how cold, so I'd just go to bed with cosy jammies on. The morning will be the worst bit, but if you have a portable heater for one room, breakfast and dressed asap and everyone going to school/work? Should be ok!

Wherehavetheyallgone · 20/11/2024 20:12

Are you far from a supermarket - Asda, Morrisons etc all sell inexpensive plug-in fan heaters or oi- filled radiators. Just buy one or two and use tonight. Handy to have anyway.

dontmindthegap · 20/11/2024 20:12

Perhaps a neighbour can lend you sleeping bags if you don’t have any yourselves?

AwakeNotThruChoice · 20/11/2024 20:12

I have had an oil filled radiator (plugs into mains ) for about 10 years. Well worth getting one. They are also really economical. We take ours camping too sometimes.

Maybe get one now then you’ve got it for other emergencies.

Oh ffs.

I'd just go to bed op and hope you get it sorted tomorrow.

Pigeonqueen · 20/11/2024 20:13

I couldn’t be bothered with the faff of leaving my home just for one night.

FanofLeaves · 20/11/2024 20:13

It depends on your house really. We live in a flat that does ok without central heating on that much. No high ceilings, double glazing, not massive, one door… we’d be fine. I’d make sure my little boy was toastie but actually I much prefer to sleep without being warm 🤣 I’d have the window open on a cold night if it was up to me.

If you live in a big drafty place and it will be unpleasant then consider accom but it’s lots of hassle to pack everyone up on a school night.

Seeline · 20/11/2024 20:13

We never have the heating on overnight anyway.
Extra blankets for the morning, or sleeping bags.
Hopefully got a fan heater or something to get going in one room in the morning and porridge for breakfast.

“Come on children, stiff upper lip! Blow off those cobwebs! March… one… two… one…”.

I also grew up in a house with no heating (at all) and it was miserable. We survived but growing up like that and being used to it is very different to dealing with cold when you’re not used to it. A cold child isn’t a sign of poor resilience.

OP, I probably wouldn’t go to a hotel but how water bottles, blankets, hot drinks, and lots of cuddling.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 20/11/2024 20:14

I’d wrap up and go to bed.

We did almost a month with no heating a good few years back, over Christmas as well! No hot water either but we did have an electric shower thankfully.

Our boiler was repaired twice but it was kaput and we had to get it replaced in January.

I skipped into work Christmas Day and Boxing Day because it was warm🤣

We survived with portable heaters and blankets! Our electricity bill was huge, thankfully electricity was a lot cheaper in those days!
