To ask for a tumble dryer for Xmas?

light hearted thread as there’s bigger disagreements to have in this world.

DH asked what I would like for Xmas and I requested a tumble dryer. To him this is completely off the table as Christmas presents should be about wants… I want a tumble dryer. It’s not a necessity, DH has said that we should just buy one if I really want one.

DH doesn’t really treat himself during the year and looks forward to Xmas as he usually has a large Lego set on his ‘list’. The last couple of years I’ve ended up with something that I’ve more requested just for the sake of it. The years I’ve asked for either vouchers/nothing I want of high value, I just end up with expensive-well thought about gifts which end up just adding to the mounds of stuff around the house. There’s nothing I want… apart from a tumble dryer!

I imagine he'd feel guilty if he gets his Lego and you get a tumble drier!

How about tickets to a show/nice hotel day/spa day etc and you just buy the tumble drier (if funds allow)

If that’s really what you want his Xmas budget for your pressie to be spent on for whatever reason, then no, you are NOT BU. Go for it! However, make sure that he realises that this is a one off and you expect a ‘want’ in subsequent years, unless you clearly state otherwise. (I mention this last bit so that we don’t have you telling us after Xmas 25 that he bought you a new iron/vacuum cleaner/whatever without asking what you wanted, and that you have accordingly - and rightly - twatted him to death with it, and now want tips on how to hide his cold dead body…) 🙂

I asked for a fridge freezer for my birthday and got it. Perfectly acceptable gift if that’s you asked for. Like you I hate adding to the mounds of “stuff” in the house!

I asked for a big flat screen TV once and years later a smart TV. I need a new phone husband said nah it's fine. Ummmm it keeps freezing, crashing. I know why it's because I'm getting one for Christmas. 😁

@Bloodybrambles if you want a tumble dryer that's absolutely fine.

UpTheMagicChristmasTree · 20/11/2024 19:24

They are brilliant, I don't even have yo iron anymore!

whiteroseredrose · 20/11/2024 19:24

I've had a vacuum cleaner for Christmas twice. YANBU!!

SwedishEdith · 20/11/2024 19:27

I've always said I'd like a cleaner to do a deep clean of the whole house. If it would make you happy, I think just get it and stick a gift tag on it.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 20/11/2024 19:28

I requested an Arthur Price canteen of cutlery one year because DH would have carried on with the cheap IKEA stuff otherwise.

Soontobe60 · 20/11/2024 19:30

My ex DH once bought me a microwave for Christmas as I’d said I’d like one. I didn’t actually mean I’d like it for Christmas! I left him on New Year’s Eve!

Wishimaywishimight · 20/11/2024 19:31

It's a household expense, not a gift for you though. Saying it's foryou is saying laundry is solely your job!

Each to their own though, if it would make you happy then do it.

Topseyt123 · 20/11/2024 19:38

Not at all unreasonable if it would make you happy and is definitely what you want.

I must say that I consider that washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher to be mine. I don't even know why. When I am away DH and the DDs use them perfectly happily. I just have my own ways I like things done I guess, and I like them just so

Catza · 20/11/2024 20:03

Absolutely fine. My best birthday gift was a new bicycle saddle. My MIL also very helpfully gifted me a set of fancy tea towels and a bread tin for Christmas (it raised a few eyebrows though).

AutumnLeaves24 · 20/11/2024 20:14

If he's said you can afford it & to just buy one, I think you're being unreasonable. He wants to buy you a treat for Christmas, not an appliance, maybe because he wants to treat you or maybe just so he doesn't feel bad getting a treat himself??

Anyway, just buy the tumble & think of something that's a treat.

personally I like a surprise. I'd rather a £5 surprise than a £500 parent I've 'ordered'

i don't know what I'd say, there's nothing I can think of (and depends on the budget) but I'd put some effort into finding something.

stargazerlil · 20/11/2024 21:10

Are you sure your not just showing off because a lot of women get appliances when what they really want is jewellery?

SauvignonBlonk · 20/11/2024 22:21

I asked for a dishwasher for Christmas years ago - loved it! Loved it far more than ex H.
I used to ask my boyfriend years ago for a diamond necklace every year for Christmas…until the year i asked for a big vibrator - that year he got me the sodding diamond necklace. Obviously.
