Influencers are shallow as are the sheeple who follow them. Next question?

DancingFerret · 20/11/2024 12:49

The OP's inability to construct an interesting post suggests she's a dedicated follower of vacuous influencers.

Minglingpringle · 20/11/2024 17:52

Perhaps they are just sad and insecure.

Namechangeobviously2024 · 20/11/2024 17:56

You could have a philosophy degree and work for MSF and follow influencers. They're just another form of entertainment.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 20/11/2024 18:01

My husband followed an influencer for a while. He had no dress sense but was starting a new job where a smart but casual look was needed and someone recommended an influencer who blogged about style and building capsule wardrobes.

It helped him enormously and even though he no longer follows her he keeps to her simple rules when buying clothes. He's not shallow , has loads of interests and a great job and no longer has to ask me what he should wear ( this used to drive me nuts as he was properly hopeless )

There is a place for influencers and if they help people then they are providing a useful service.

TheBigSalami · 20/11/2024 18:02

The whole point of being an influencer is to have people follow and be influenced by you.

The content creator medium is a shallow as fuck. I think that’s why it’s so successful. ‘Influencer’ is basically a euphemism for an unemployed freeloader.

My niece is one. She’s not worked a day in her life since she left her top uni. She’s having a marvellous time largely duping her gullible followers, travelling all over the world and making about £250k per year. She’s 23 and about to buy her first house in London, on her own. It’s bloody amazing and I can’t see the bubble bursting any time soon.

putitdown356 · 20/11/2024 18:05

@PinkArt agree with this. I don't see the difference between 'copying' Cliff Richard in his hey days, The Cure, Prince (showing my age!), etc etc and influencers today.

Lifeglowup · 20/11/2024 18:06

It depends what they’re doing and why.

Copying clothes and style is surely no different than copying a manican (sp?) on a show display.

Copying household management or cleaning is no different than reading a magazine or asking Aunty Linda’s advice.

Copying holiday ideas is no different than asking a travel agent or getting recommendation from Jenny on the school
run.

The only person I know who has something like "content creator/public figure" on her instagram is a raging narc. She pays for likes and randoms with fake accounts send flame emoji's and call her a "babe" in the comments. It's actually terribly sad. She forgot to pay a couple of months ago and didn't get a single like for 2 weeks, then presumably she did and it went up to the usual number within a day... I think it's had it's time and people who are still doing it (and heavily editing pictures to the point it's obvious) should be on people's "watch list" for mental health issues with a view to supporting them with their sense of self.

Maybe we are the fools and not people like your niece. I can see why people aspire to be an influencer.

@Fiis good luck on your assignment. When is it due in?

People don’t like influencers because some of them:

  • don’t disclose adverts, making it look like they paid for something themselves and therefore it’s a more trustworthy recommendation
  • photoshop themselves to look better and at the same time sell skincare etc
  • are from a very wealthy background but pretend that they are self made and anyone else could have their life. Some even pretend to be skint when they are in fact backed by wealthy parents.

This makes people suspicious and distrustful of all influencers.

That said, in response to the thread title and OP, influencer marketing obviously works for brands (perhaps in part due to the points above making these women’s lives look amazing) so no, it’s not “shallow” to copy them, because that is the whole point and it works.

I don't dislike influencers because of those things. I dislike them because I dislike the whole concept of influencers.
