Should young people travel more while they're still young?

Or save money?

Mid 40s and holiday 5 times a year. I spend all my money on holidays. Being a bit more adventurous each time.

You never know what's around the corner.

minipie · 18/11/2024 19:03

Just want to point out that it is possible to fit a lot of travel into a 2-3 week annual leave holiday. So it really doesn’t have to be a choice between having a job in your 20s vs having extended gap years.

If you travel cheaply and live fairly cheaply when home then you can save up too - especially if you are savvy and do things like air bnb your place while away.

I did a lot of trips all over the world whilst working - ok, I never had the experience of months and months away but I’m ok with that. I have still seen the amazing sights and cultures and have the memories.

If love my kids to travel, I did a bit of it and loved it, but it’s not so much money as much as safety. The thought of my DD going off to dodgy countries scares the shit out of me

Save money and aim for building security.

I don't think the next 50 years will look like the last 50 years. The social contract will buckle under the weight of caring needs of an increasingly aged and sick population and so flitting about travelling rather than establishing a career will come with a far bigger penalty than it did for us.

People who are drawn to safety and security over adventure have said what you have said every single generation.

Reality is when you are young and renting in a big city, you barely have enough to scrape by. You are not really likely to be saving much.

You can work and travel and at the end of a couple of years be in the same financial position as someone who slogged away at home

Another for travel, someone asked if I was told I had limited time what my goals would be and my travel ones were ticked off (Australia, Paris, London, New York)

I don't want to hijack, but are the people talking about travelling in their 40s and 50s etc going solo?

It has just dawned on me that the years are flying by, I am 50 next year and I want to see more of the world, but have no one to go with. My boyfriend is uninterested in travel with me, even a week long holiday (he goes with mates on biking holidays - we don't live together. It's just how it is).

If I want to see the world I will have to do it on my own, but I really lack confidence.

@WestwardHo1 I find this Facebook group handy and inspiring.
My first time doing a link so hopefully this works.

Travelling definitely. My 20 yo is off and about all over the place in the Uni holidays. She's always put 20% of any earned funds in to her "travel" account and has a huge eye for a bargain. It can be very cheap if you are prepared to travel with little luggage and stay in hostels etc. She and her friends did a speed tour of Italy by train at the beginning of the summer - Turin, Florence, Rome, Naples etc - all in at 600 euros. She's been to London, Milan, Albania, Krakow, Warsaw, Lake Como, Valencia....She's now looking at various options to do her Masters abroad - Poland or Italy are top at the moment, possibly Malta and applied to a "bequest" at her Uni where they fund 10 students a year to do a modern version of the "Grand Tour". I find it quite terrifying sometimes.

Thank you - it did!

Travel
-it educates, broadens the mind, gives ambition, can help you expand your networks, gift you friendships, even meet a life partner, gives fresh perspectives, challenge your subconscious biases, be exposed to foreign languages and for several industries - and people who travel with the right attitude - can make you a more attractive candidate.

What’s not to like? If only interrailing was still as cheap though and travel was accessible to more young people. Good to see British universities have rejoined the Erasmus scheme at least.

IDontDrinkTea · 18/11/2024 19:41

Considering the newspapers seem to think my generation can’t afford to get on the housing ladder because we buy too many avocados, I’m baffled how many people say the young should be travelling over saving 😂

HollaHolla · 18/11/2024 19:49

Travel travel travel. I became physically disabled in my late 30s. It's not been a sweetener, but I'm so glad I travelled so much when I was younger. I still want to travel, but backpacking through India again in my 40s isn't going to happen. I have to be realistic.
Experiences will always be with you. So what if I didn't buy property until I was 30?

roastiepotato · 18/11/2024 19:53

It's not essential to travel but if it's important to them then yes they should do it while they can

EmmaMaria · 18/11/2024 19:56

I am 67 and I have travelled the world over. I talk to people who say that they'll do it when they retire. I point to my disability and ask them if they have a guarantee they'll be fit enough. I can't walk the Great Wall, climb to Machu Pichu, camel trek in the Sahara etc. I don't need to because I've done all those things and more. Couldn't do them now. But that doesn't stop me - a just have to adapt. There are things I can't do or will never do again - but there's plenty of stuff that planning can get around. Just trekked Costa Rica - in an all-terrain quad bike!

Haha, you sound like my mum 😉
My sister is currently travelling around South America and our mum is absolutely past herself 😅

Quad biking is HUGE in India!

I think it’s because I know how free and easy it is to be when travelling. Dodgy drugs, dodgy men, terrible decision making. How I came out unscathed is beyond me!

I'm 50 now and have done a lot of solo travel, including Laos, Cambodia, Jordan, Malaysia, Canada.....I've often stayed in hostels - and felt like everyone's mother! met some great people though. I don't like the idea of being tied to a group holiday personally, firstly I want to be able to do what I like and secondly what if I don't like the other people?

My advice for feeling more confident is to sort as much as you can before you go. Book all your accommodation - hostels are great if you go to Asia particularly, plan how to get there from the airport, get your head around local transport, find where ATMs/supermarkets/restaurants are. Keep your first trip easier to build your confidence - go somewhere where English is spoken, or that is firmly on the tourist trail or that isn't too far from home ie in Europe.

Do it and have an amazing time!

Similar style of travel to me except I just book first 2 nights somewhere and wing it from there

Irridescantshimmmer · 18/11/2024 20:22

Only if they want to.
