To support UK Farmers

And due to KS's inability to face them in Wales today they are now thinking of going on strike. Because the govt are being too stubborn to reconsider how they apply IHT on working family farms. By all means close the loophole that allows the 'landed gentry' to take advantage of the agricultural exception but not with so blunt an instrument.

I was hoping to add a post to an existing thread but there isn't one despite it being headline news today.

IMO it’s a case of Old Labour rising like Dracula from its Undead grave, all ready to wage good old fashioned class warfare on everyone with any assets - except of course for their Labour cronies/donors with multiple buy to lets etc.

It's bigger than that. Governments are attempting to sort out the problem globally, levelling up and down.

DinosaurMunch · 17/11/2024 13:20

Lifelong labour voter here but won't vote for them again.

The stupidity and short sightedness of this policy just show they are ideologically driven ignoramuses.

I mean the private school thing was stupid enough (I think all private schools should be abolished and the policy is still shit) but this is ten times worse

DinosaurMunch · 17/11/2024 13:27

ArabellaScott · 17/11/2024 12:21

We are living in a neoliberal, globalist, hyper-individualist society.

Traditional farming doesn't fit into that mould very well at all.

What sort of food do you want to eat in your neo liberal society then?
Cheap low quality imports produced by people on low wages?

Or good quality, welfare friendly, environmentally sustainable food that is produced by people whose kids attend school and get free healthcare?

I'm not really understanding your argument - can you explain?

38thparallel · 17/11/2024 13:31

@justasking111

Do you really think poshos as you call them have any more idea than you.

I don’t understand this sentence. Any more idea about what?

But that type of food isn’t possible for the majority who can’t afford farm shops, organic veg boxes or Waitrose.

G1nT1n · 17/11/2024 13:36

And what has that yo do with farmers paying inheritance tax?

G1nT1n · 17/11/2024 13:38

suburburban · 17/11/2024 13:12

It wasn't ok,and do we need more of it

Especially when the, governments keep, bleating on about the environment

But people need homes and not to be fleeced by landlords renting shit holes for exorbitant amounts of money.

notanothernamechange24 · 17/11/2024 13:54

This thread is just utter proof of how disconnected people have become from how food is produced.
@G1nT1n you can and do afford food from British farms every single day. Very very small amounts of British food is sold in farm shops. And farm shops are nowhere near as expensive as many believe, especially if you're buying seconds or ugly veg.
Unless you are growing 100% of the food you eat YOU PERSONALLY will be consuming food from a BRITISH FARM every single day!

You can want to punish the people who feed you every day all you like. You can be spiteful and jealous of what you perceive that they have 'better' than you do. But you are mistaken. And each and everyone of you will live to regret it if we have food shortages in the coming years due to poor policy and poor planing now.
I can promise you that!

Nope don’t want to punish anybody but do want farmers to pay inheritance tax and to quit moaning about it.

To be honest, lots of people have to pay inheritance tax on eg. a terraced house in London. It's not as if they have the option of selling off bits of land. Who does have 100% job security for themselves and their children?

I see a marked shift towards vegetarianism so I don't think it's a bad thing at all if the meat industry becomes a thing of the past. Sooner the better. It's a horrendous industry and you can't really expect people to feel sorry for those who make a 'living' sending god knows how many animals to slaughter, generation after generation. Yes you could say they are only responding to demand, but less beef / chicken / pig farms means higher prices and then people will eat less meat - so less animal suffering and a healthier, happier population.

Personally, I think the govt should tax the meat industry heavily, alongside blocking cheap meat imports, alongside subsidies to those switching to sustainable crop production and / or rewilding.

Re Your first para
Whilst lots of people have to pay inheritance tax on their residential property they at least have had all their lives to transfer it to their children using the 7 year rule to avoid IHT
Farmers have not been given the same respect and privilege as others in this.

In fact They have not been given any warning at all!

I think this explains it in a nutshell. Why shouldnt they pay as everyone else has to ?

DEFRA secretary Steve Reed has said “Only the richest estates will be asked to pay – not small, family farms”. According to the Chancellor, 72% of farms won’t be affected, with the treasury estimating that just 500 farms per year expected to pay more tax. Maybe farmers would be better off standing up to the supermarkets than this Government

And yet new figures sate the figure of 66% will have to pay
It depends what you read

Look at the 3-5% student loss figure given by the Labour Government for Private schools. Whilst the ISC independent schools council sited 10%. Surprise surprise it’s already over 10%.

StandingSideBySide · 17/11/2024 14:06

AuntyBumBum · 17/11/2024 11:16

And a loss in food security as others have pointed out

The loss of jobs would be rather like what happened in the mining industry and other heavy industries which we've now outsourced. The theory is that over time we become a better-trained workforce and switch over to exporting services, not goods. We'd leave farming and manufacturing to low wage economies. But it will be a painful transition, it's true.

As such we would be entirely at the mercy of other countries for our food.!

Why would anyone want this? It's madness I agree

notanothernamechange24 · 17/11/2024 14:09

@G1nT1n think we have found Rachel Reeves!

You got it wrong Rachel! Even your husband is against you on this one!
When making policy that is going to have a massive impact on agriculture it's worth at least talking it through with DEFRA first!

StandingSideBySide · 17/11/2024 14:14

ArabellaScott · 17/11/2024 12:56

According to this poll, 40% of people don't support farmers.

That is bloody weird.

Im really not surprised
This is a policy of envy. If I can’t have it neither can they…Labour came in to power because of this attitude.

Coolasfeck · 17/11/2024 14:20

No it’s nothing to do with support for Labour. I’d support this policy if Tories brought it in too

For me it’s quite simple: Everyone should be subject to the same rules. I’m pretty sure neither me nor my DC will be starving Mad Max style as a result.

Why go backwards on something most would agree is important these days?

StandingSideBySide · 17/11/2024 14:30

Wonder how everyone would feel if a new inheritance tax was brought in TOMORROW for everyone with more than £1 in the bank to pay IHT
I mean
everyone with less than £325,000 can currently get away without paying it.

It would need to be brought in immediately though so no one has a chance to plan just like Labour have done to the farmers.

Everyone isn’t subject to the same rules, most people don’t pay a penny in IHT

Most properties are worth way more so it isn't great imo

Wish they'd raise it up to 1 million
