To expect guests to wash their hands on arrival?

Am I being unreasonable in thinking people should wash their hands when coming from outside to your house?
Would you ask kids who come to yours for a playdate to wash their hands?
Would you ask adults?

OP posts:
GreyCarpet · 16/11/2024 12:38

Wouldn't even occur to me tbh.

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 16/11/2024 12:38

No, you’re being bit weird there, OP.

RosieLeaf · 16/11/2024 12:38

No. I think only a person with a very disordered view on hygiene would demand this.

Nanny0gg · 16/11/2024 12:39

Children probably yes, if they're going to play with toys, have a drink and a snack

Adults, no.

OrsolaRosso · 16/11/2024 12:39

If kids are over for a play date, I would ask them to wash hands before food. That's it.

Neolara · 16/11/2024 12:39

That's a very weird thing to do.

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/11/2024 12:39

I always wash my hands if I’ve arrived on public transport which can be a bit grotty, but not if I’ve driven or walked. Life is dirty, at some point you just have to let it go.

Kids should wash hands before eating. Adults can decide for themselves if they want to lick their hands clean.

GagaBinks · 16/11/2024 12:40

That's weird and rude in my book

Hankunamatata · 16/11/2024 12:40

No. It's weird

RosieFlamingo · 16/11/2024 12:40

Nope, very weird.

Elle771 · 16/11/2024 12:41

Wierd to ask adults this... ans would only expect kids to wash hands before eating or if they are obviously dirty perhaps

Sheepareawesome · 16/11/2024 12:41

Would never occur to me, unless they were holding a dog poo bag or something!

WeeOrcadian · 16/11/2024 12:41

Erm.... Nope

Do you usually have germ anxiety OP?

Singleandproud · 16/11/2024 12:42

We wash out hands on entering if we've been to the park or supermarket etc as do my parents so I guess I got it from them.

Adults I would never ask. Children I'd normally do some snacks when they come in so would for that but wouldn't just for entering the house unless obviously mucky.

gcsedilemma · 16/11/2024 12:42

I would wash my hands if I'd been travelling on public transport but not if I'd just been in the car ( unless I was visiting a newborn baby... more out if consideration for anxious mums rather than thinking that I could "give" them anything)

lemonyellows · 16/11/2024 12:42

The world has gone mad

Havalona · 16/11/2024 12:44

I honestly think I'd turn on my heel and wish you good day if you asked me to do that. The inference is that I am a dirty cow and how dare I bring germs into your home.
It is a bit OTT, do you steam clean your mail that the dirty postman/woman has just dropped in your letterbox, having opened all the letterboxes on the road, and what about the delivery of goods and so on. Honestly, exposure to germs is good for us.

FixingStuff · 16/11/2024 12:44

I wash my own hands when I get home, but I have an impaired immune system which is very well proven problem. I don't have visitors very often because of the immune system problem and for some reason, having kids around isn't really a problem.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/11/2024 12:44

I don't expect this of guests, nor do I wash my hands on arrival at other people's homes. I wash my hands after going to the loo and before cooking but that's about it. I very rarely catch viruses so this approach works for me.

Whaleandsnail6 · 16/11/2024 12:44

No I find that very strange.

I'd expect adults to be able to take responsibility for their own hand hygiene.

If young children come over, if they have been playing in mud or dirt, I'd tell them to wash hands before we eat

Smartiepants79 · 16/11/2024 12:44

Nope.
certainly not adults
Kids if they’ve been out playing in the mud, maybe.
I’d find it decidedly odd if someone asked me to wash the minute I stepped through the door. Unless they’re severely immunocompromised.

GiraffeTree · 16/11/2024 12:45

Literally no one I know does this.

Doggymummar · 16/11/2024 12:45

Very odd, so yes you are

Iloveshihtzus · 16/11/2024 12:46

This is what Covid has done to the world - made the insane seem ok.

I would never ask any guest, child or adult, to wash their hands.

floppybit · 16/11/2024 12:47

I would never ask an adult to wash their hands! This is nuts
