Reception party - Pyjama or magic/clown?

Pyjamaormagic · 15/11/2024 22:09

My DS will turn 5 soon and I need to plan his party.

Which theme do you think is best?

  1. Pyjama - 30 class kids to be wearing their pyjamas and have fun, musical pillows, glitter tattoos etc.
  1. Magic/clown party - With some tricks, games etc.

I am a bit bored of the superheros/Frozen parties and I am trying to think of something different but I can't think of something that will appeal to both sexes.

AIBU - Pyjama
AINBU - Magic/clown

Never clowns. Not especially keen on the idea of a PJ party either, but anything is better than clowns.

pinksquash13 · 15/11/2024 22:10

Pjs feels a bit weird if I'm honest. I like the idea of a magic party but some kids find clowns scary.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 15/11/2024 22:11

Agree - not clowns. Could you do magic with wizards and fairies?

Mumistiredzzzz · 15/11/2024 22:12

Just do a disco with balloons and bubbles

CCLCECSC · 15/11/2024 22:12

Magician

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 15/11/2024 22:12

Don't really like either if i'm honest. What's he into? I'd go for something he enjoys.

You're really playing to stereotypes here. I can't think of any theme that excludes a sex.

Marblesbackagain · 15/11/2024 22:13

I wouldn't do PJ's, some parents may not be happy with that. Never clowns so I would recommend the magician.

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 22:14

Just play traditional party games and have to music to dance too.
It doesn't need a theme. The theme is "birthday".
And definitely not clowns.
Absolutely no way.
Shudder

WhitbyBee · 15/11/2024 22:16

Nothing that makes parents have to fork out money for new outfits which a pj party would do.

Pyjamaormagic · 15/11/2024 22:17

What's wrong with clowns everyone? They are 5-year old kids , they haven't seen horror movies!

I used to love clowns as a kid. Did things change?

Jungle theme? You could get some animal masks and it would be really easy to decorate and play animal themed games.

Does it even have to have a theme? If you like the magic idea then yes get a magician (not clown) and he can entertain them for a bit but you don't need to make it into a full blown theme.

TeenGreenBottles · 15/11/2024 22:18

I don't think it needs a theme, but magic and clowns sound good. Don't get the clown hatred, I don't think DCs that young will be scared, it's not like they've seen It.

PJ party sounds chilly this time of year.

InTheRainOnATrain · 15/11/2024 22:18

PJ thing is reallt weird, I don’t get the musical pillow thing at all and glitter tattoos are a fine add on but not all kids will be interested, which is for the best really as if they all wanted them it’d take too long.

Clowns are creepy AF and likely to scare the kids. I didn’t think anyone did them anymore.

Magician is good for older ones but with reception age you’d need to choose carefully as it can be really tricky to hold the attention of 4-5YOs - if you have a recommendation great but if not I’d avoid.

If this is a DIY thing in a hall a bouncy castle, loads of balloons, music, bit of a disco and some old school party games like musical statues would probably be your best bet. And no dress code! The theme should only go as far as the paper plates and cups, and be whatever your child picks!

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 22:18

Clowns are creepy.
They just are.

TheWoodpecker · 15/11/2024 22:20

What would they actually do at the pj party?

Marblesbackagain · 15/11/2024 22:21

Because a significant portion of children and adults have a phobia of them. They are as creepy as hell, before I ever saw a horror film.

When was the last time you saw a clown at a birthday party.

ThrillhouseVanHouten · 15/11/2024 22:21

Echoing the no clowns sentiment!

Can't vote as my vote is 'neither'.
Just let them come wearing whatever they would like to wear.

Don't add to the stress and workload of parents.

It doesn't need a 'theme'. Surely the 'theme' is that it is your child's birthday ?

Fridayagainandagain · 15/11/2024 22:23

Pyjamas party idea is weird unless it is a sleepover. At 5 my grandchildren associate pyjamas with bath and winding down for sleeping, certainly going to a party. Why does it need a theme anyway?

Marblesbackagain · 15/11/2024 22:24

When I was a kid :-D

I am guessing that isn't in the past twenty years so.

Pyjamaormagic · 15/11/2024 22:25

It's my first born and so far in this first term we have been to 4 parties! one was princesses, the other superheros, the other frozen, the other tractors and the other pirates.

It has to have a theme I am afraid and I am trying not repeating myself...

Missed out 'not' before the going to a party.

Singleandproud · 15/11/2024 22:26

What's wrong with soft play, or a science party instead of a clown.
Not PJs
