Shoes debate - In or out?!

Pinot2 · 15/11/2024 21:19

Do you wear shoes in your home?

Do you walk up and down with shoes on?

I am not talking about the unfortunate occasion that you are ready to leave the house and you say oh no, I forgot the X thing and you tip - toe to take this X thing with shoes on.

I am talking about getting into the house and keep walking with your shoes like they are your slippers.

I just saw a photo, it triggered me and thought to open a thread!

AIBU - Yes we wear shoes inside. Is there a problem with this?

AINBU - No, we take them off at the entrance and they don't ever go close to living room, kitchen, bedrooms etc.

Don't like shoes anywhere indoors as a rule. May occasionally walk around downstairs, where we have flooring and tiles, but never upstairs - don't want any dirt and germs from outside on the carpets.
Most visitors know to take their shoes off already, if not, I'd tell them, and I always take my shoes off in other people's houses.

Getamoveon2024 · 15/11/2024 22:08

I always take my shoes off and put on slippers. I would never ask a guest to remove their shoes.

PartyOFive · 15/11/2024 22:09

Shoes off, even though we have no carpets downstairs I still don't want outdoor mud and all else traipsed about. Plus it puts me on edge as I feel they are about to leave or I should be about to leave.

I will ask visiting kids and workmen to take shoes off. Most friends take theirs off having (as pp put it) read the contextual clues. My family take their shoes off as we were also shoes off growing up (in a different culture).

I wouldn't ask elderly relatives or friends to remove shoes if they didn't do it automatically, as I appreciate there can be lots of reasons why people prefer to have them on.

That's said, I did eventually get so fed up of MIL walking about indoors with her outdoor shoes when we first had a crawling baby, that I asked her if we could get her some indoor shoes for our house and now she has some hat live here.

No33 · 15/11/2024 22:13

I take them off, but it's not a hard and fast rule

Allfur · 15/11/2024 22:14

Don't mind either way for anyone, family or guest, floors can be cleaned

Francias · 15/11/2024 22:15

I live in the countryside.

Wellies off at the door.

WhatMe123 · 15/11/2024 22:18

I wear mine inside yea as without my feet would be freezing. Kids always take theirs off though 🤔

Cosyblankets · 15/11/2024 22:22

I've got a dog so my floors get cleaned pretty much every day. Hard floor so quick job. But these threads always make me wonder how often shoes off people clean their floors. Why does no one just wipe their feet? If you've nipped to tesco in the car what harm is there in a quick wipe? I walk the dog in my boots or wellies so obviously they come off at the door but everything else no, i wipe my feet and I've never once had someone traipse dog poo in my house.

On the "elderly person" note..

Took my Gran and Grandad to view a new home, told the estate agent beforehand that they were looking to downsize to a bungalow due to mobility problems and falls risks, recovery from recent fractured femur etc.

They arrive with a stick and a rollator, obvious poor mobility. Bright sunny day, no rain or mud. Both in clean orthopedic shoes. They can't leave home without support so those shoes only worn indoors at home anyway.

We arrive at the house and the EA says, "now if it was a do-er upper, I'd let you keep your shoes on but these floors are PRISTINE so I'm going to have to ask you to pop them off."

Gran looked panic stricken as her shoes literally keep her upright and support her ankles. There was nowhere in the hallway for them to hold on to, or sit to remove them. Neither of the two of them can bend down to their feet from standing. The EA watched us struggling, me having to get on my hands and knees to remove their footwear while also trying to steady them (they had to hold on to my back and head!). I suggested maybe we should just leave it and accept they couldn't view but they were both really embarrassed and upset I'd taken a day off to help them and it was all going to be a waste so insisted we went ahead with the viewing. Gran slipping everywhere as she was now in compression stockings with no shoe supports, so holding on to me for dear life.

EA just stood there watching, grinning inanely.

The floors were not pristine. They stunk of cheesy feet and were easy to clean laminate or dirty well trodden beige carpets in the bedrooms. All almost ten years old.

She stood and watched the whole putting the shoes back on rigmarole on the way out with the silly grin on her face and had the cheek to say, "careful you don't topple over now - I used to work for injury lawyers for you! Don't want to get sued by my old boss!"

Have sworn off using that EA ever again!

So far this thread is much more civil than most threads about this topic on mumsnet.

Shoes off here, no exceptions whatsoever. DW is Japanese and culturally shoes in the house is out of the question for Japanese people.

honestasever · 15/11/2024 22:37

We take our shoes off (all hard floors downstairs) but don’t insist visitors do

Shodan · 15/11/2024 22:38

I take my shoes off, because I like to change my socks and put slippers on when I get in (socks that have been worn all day can lead to fungal infections as they get slightly damp).

Guests can do what they like, although I never ask them to remove their shoes.( I prefer them not to remove their shoes, tbh; see above note about damp socks and add in sweaty feet). I think it's rude and inhospitable to do so; consequently I have flooring that is fit for purpose. I also have a stout door mat.

However I can't think of any occasion when I've had a guest uncouth enough to tramp through mud, dog poo or other unpleasant substances prior to coming in my house.

mowthegrass · 15/11/2024 22:43

I used to immediately change into slippers when I’d come home but we have a dog who loses his shit when our ‘outdoor feet’ go on, ie shoes, so I tend to wear trainers all day.
No carpets.

BlueSilverCats · 15/11/2024 22:44

Me and DD take shoes off. OH is a shoes on twat person.

Guests can choose.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/11/2024 22:44

Shoes on, but contrary to what shoes-off people seems to think, we don't go gaily tramping in mud then walking it in. In practice, for much of the year, it's change into indoor shoes as we come in.

I have cats - I don't wash their paws as they come in.

And if I'm barefoot in summer, I'll be barefoot out of doors as well, and I'm not going to stop and wash my feet every time I pop in.

I do however wash my floors.

Readytoevolve · 15/11/2024 22:46

Shoes off.

for people who call regularly they do get the drift now. We have a crawling baby so I can use that as an excuse.

Elderly people that visit I wouldn’t ask to.

I think it’s rude to wear shoes inside someone else’s house.

Deeperthantheocean · 15/11/2024 22:47

After new floors and carpet all take off. X

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/11/2024 22:50

"I think it’s rude to wear shoes inside someone else’s house." Whereas I think it's rude to start discarding clothing without being invited to. Like walking in and immediately taking off your coat. "Making yourself at home" in someone else's home. Rude.

JWKD · 15/11/2024 22:53

I always leave my shoes on. I don't know anyone who doesn't wear shoes at home.

RampantIvy · 15/11/2024 22:56

I prefer to wear slippers indoors because they are more comfortable.

Fuelledbylatte · 15/11/2024 22:57

Always shoes off
No shoes upstairs, ever.
Slippers or barefoot household here.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 15/11/2024 23:00

Yes, I wear shoes in the house (although I hate wearing shoes so take them off ASAP).

No, I’d never ask guests to take their shoes off. I’d feel insanely rude doing so.

However, people should do as they wish in their homes and if shoes gross them out then off they come.

Flossflower · 15/11/2024 23:03

Our house is shoes off. It is a warm house. Guests take their shoes off but I have plastic covers if needed. We also do not allow animals in our house.

Threecraws · 15/11/2024 23:04

I mainly have my shoes off in the house but it is about convenience and comfort so if I'm an going in and out a few times, I would keep them on. I would never expect anyone to take shoes off coming in the house although lots do. Going to other people's houses I would take shoes off but it does put me off visiting as most of the time, there is little room and no where to sit at the door.

fashionqueen0123 · 15/11/2024 23:11

Shoes off. I can’t think of anyone’s house I’ve been to who doesn’t take shoes off 🤔 There is always a pile of shoes or a shoe cupboard by peoples front doors or hallways etc
My kids are well trained and know to take them off when we get to someone else’s house.

I can’t imagine relaxing on the couch with a pair of boots or trainers on Ive been wearing all day.
I wear slippers in the winter.
