To donate to my DCs school

DC goes to our local state school. It’s common knowledge that schools are short on money
and they run various fundraising events throughout the year. We didn’t consider private for moral reasons and also the long term commitment of the fees we have a reasonable income but aren’t wealthy as such. We could comfortably donate to our school though and I want to give money that will actually make some sort of difference and benefit the kids. Does anyone else do this, and how much do you think would make a difference? I have no idea about school finances so am not sure what will help. £200, £500, £1000? Every term or so?

All the money you can give. Many schools can’t balance their books. The ones I know the details of are good or outstanding schools, in nice areas and full to capacity or in case of one secondary they’ve increased every class to 32 students.

Forgot to say DC is in reception in a primary school.

Volunteer for the PTA, help raise the money and donate at the same time, the meetings I went to we discussed what the money was for and how much was needed

That's so kind. I would talk to the school headteacher and see what they recommend then decide to what you would prefer to do. E.g. a lump sum payment of £10,000 could buy a new outdoor play area which would benefit the most kids including your own whilst they r at school, vs £10 a month to help balance the books. What are you most passionate about? E.g. if you love reading, you could buy a new book per class from a list they provide each month vs if you love art you could restock their art supplies for a year at approx £5,000. Alternatively, they may get creative and suggest your money be a cash prize at their school raffle e.g. your £1000 could generate £3000 in raffle ticket sales.

You could also think about your contacts, could you find corporate sponsorship? Link the school with any charities or offer to work for free e.g. helping write applications for grant money?

Our school have an Amazon wish list which is great. You can buy cheaper books to more expensive items. Ask the school if the need any donations like chalk / paints etc.

Wot shakey said.

Get involved and you will understand what is needed rather than just throwing random £s at them.
